The Department of Horticulture is seeking highly qualified applicants for Research Fellow. The successful candidate will be expected to help operate and develop Dr. Daniel Wells' research program in urban and controlled environment horticulture. Current program personnel include four M.S. students, one Ph.D. student, and two Research Associates. Dr. Wells is PI or Co-PI on three nationally-funded projects and manages a program called FoodU which is a teaching, outreach, and food production program that engages undergraduate and graduate students in the campus food system.

  • Current projects in which the successful candidate will participate include developing novel techniques to improve salinity tolerance in greenhouse vegetables, plant meristem temperature manipulation in controlled environments, greenhouse tomato crop modeling, and improving water and nutrient retention in a rooftop garden substrate.
  • Research will be conducted in greenhouses, vertical farms, growth chambers, and outdoor research plots.
  • The successful candidate will be expected to manage personnel, co-mentor graduate students, develop research proposals, plan and execute experiments, analyze data, and publish research findings in high-quality journals.
Minimum QualificationsMinimum QualificationsEducation and Experience:
Level I: PhD in Horticulture, Aquaculture, or a closely related field; no experience required.

Level II: PhD in Horticulture, Aquaculture, or a closely related field and 2 years experience in research practices and protocols.

Level III: PhD in Horticulture, Aquaculture, or a closely related field and 4 years experience in research practices and protocols.Minimum Skills, License, and CertificationsMinimum Skills and Abilities
  • Experience with aquaculture, aquaponics, and hydroponics
  • History of publishing in peer-reviewed journals
  • Ability and desire to mentor graduate students
