Employment Attorney/Of CounselHarmon, Curran, Spielberg & Eisenberg, LLP, a small, collegial, values-oriented law firm in Washington, DC that serves the progressive nonprofit public interest community, is seeking a mid-level or senior attorney to join our firm s employment law practice.The position offers the opportunity to help advise organizations working to advance civil rights, environmental protection, immigrant rights, democracy, accountability, and other social and economic justice issues. We help our clients understand and navigate the law in a way that reflects and furthers their values. The attorney will primarily counsel clients on employment law matters but will also provide general counsel and corporate governance advice to the firm s clients. We are interested in candidates who share our public interest orientation and would like to continue growing the firm with us. Because the individual in this position will assist our existing clients, applicants do not need to bring a portable book of business. Qualified candidates should have experience with the range of federal, state, and local laws that govern employment relationships in the workplace, such as anti-discrimination and anti-harassment law, wage and hour law, family and medical leave and sick and safe leave laws, as well as with workplace compliance issues such as obligations under express and implied employment contracts and best practices for handling discipline and separations. Expertise in employee benefits is desirable. Since many of our clients function in a union environment, experience with labor law is also helpful.In addition to employment work, the attorney may advise clients about topics such as structural and governance issues, fundraising, vendor, and contractual relationships, program spin-offs, member codes of conduct and complaints, and other operational issues. Experience in any of these areas is not required but is a plus.Qualified candidates will be motivated self-starters with strong academic credentials, excellent writing and communication skills, sound judgment, and the ability to handle complicated matters with minimal supervision. They should be able to make judgment calls, assess available strategies and options, and provide feedback and guidance. Candidates should also have strong attention to detail, be comfortable managing multiple and varied client requests, and be able to quickly digest and provide advice regarding new state and federal laws. Candidates must be a member of or eligible for admission to the DC Bar.The firm requires proof of full, up to date vaccination against COVID-19 (including applicable boosters) before the first day of employment, subject to applicable law. We are open to flexible work arrangements.
