Journeyman Mechanic

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs predictive and preventive maintenance within the Paper Mill facility to including:
    • Observes mechanical devices in operation and listens to their sounds to locate causes of trouble
    • Dismantles devices to gain access to and remove defective parts
    • Examines form and texture of parts to detect imperfections
    • Inspects used parts to determine changes in dimensional requirements
    • Adjusts functional parts of devices and control instruments
    • Repairs or replaces defective parts
    • Installs special functional and structural parts in devices
    • Lubricates and cleans parts
    • Starts devices to test their performance
  • Sets up and operates tools such as [list is not all encompassing]:
    • Welding instruments for arc welding and plasma welding
    • Cutting torches
    • Drill press & Air drills
    • Grinders
    • A variety of saws, ratchets, screw drivers, drills, hammers, etc.
    • Impact wrench
    • Hydraulic rams
  • Performs repairs on equipment, or fabricate items, such as [list is not all encompassing]:
    • Forklifts, Manlifts, and vertical scissor lifts
    • Machine Guards
    • Catwalks & Stairways
    • Pumps, Cylinders, Gear Boxes & Oscillators
    • Electric carts, Skip loaders & Cranes
  • Rebuild items such as [list is not all inclusive]: Refiners & Press Roles.
  • Read a variety of gauges and devices including calipers and micrometers.
  • Replace items such as tubing, piping, hoses and valves.
  • Initiates purchase order for parts and machines.
  • Cleans work area by sweeping, picking up items and cleaning equipment.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Qualifications

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of five years industrial Mechanical experience with four years apprenticeship or equivalent.
  • Proven safety record and working knowledge of industrial safety procedures with a proven record for safe work practices.
  • Must be able to follow written and oral instruction in English.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Must be able to wear all required personal safety equipment including eye protection, hearing protection and fall protection in elevated positions.
  • Ability to be part of a multi-functional/multi-skill maintenance organization with a willingness to flow to work as required by changing mill conditions and priorities.
  • Ability to perform physical requirements and acclimate to work environment.
  • May require to workday shift and/or tour shift (12 hours - 2-day shifts and 2-night shifts
  • Applicants must pass a mechanical aptitude test
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is required to:
  • Stand for long periods of time.
  • Walk the distance of a large manufacturing facility
  • Reach with hands and arms above the shoulders
  • Have full wrist range of motion to use tools
  • Bend at the waist and twist upper body
  • Grip hand and power tools, ladders and equipment
  • Use hands to turn valves, push and pull items
  • Climb or balance on stairs, ladders & catwalks
  • Stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
  • Move, lift & carry up to 50 pounds (Occasionally up to 100 pounds)
  • Occasionally required to sit, drive heavy machinery such as a bobcat, forklift and clamp truck.
  • Vision abilities required are close vision and depth perception.
  • Able to verbally communicate and hearing abilities.

Work Environment:
  • Frequently exposed to the Mill work environment which can be hot, and the noise level is loud.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually loud (80+dB).
  • Frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions
  • Regularly exposed to loud, moving equipment
  • Frequently exposed to vibration from machinery and use of tools
Employees are required to wear Personal Protective Equipment [PPE] such as: hard hat, steel toed boots, gloves, safety glasses and hearing protection
