VirginiaCommonwealth University School of the Arts (VCUarts) Department ofCommunication Arts is establishing a pool of applicants for possible adjunctteaching positions. This pool of applicants could be drawn upon to providetemporary staffing when needed; to provide special teaching expertise whenneeded; and/or to meet special programmatic needs not otherwise provided forwithin the program. The applicant pool will remain active until the listedclosing date of the job posting.

Giventhese criteria, this pool will only be assessed when an adjunct opportunityarises. Possible adjunct opportunities could include teaching a course(s) inany of the areas of study offered by the department of Communication Arts. Ifan adjunct opportunity arises, only those selected for an interview will becontacted.

Adjunctfaculty are expected to be thoughtful and proactive members of theCommunication Arts community and have a desire to work with a diverse studentpopulation in a collaborative, inclusive and learning-centered collective.

Required Qualifications:

  • Terminal degree (MFA) in arelated field, or BFA with additional training and/or professionalexperience that equates and/or parallels the artistic development expected in aterminal degree holder.
  • Appropriate teachingexperience and/or strong oral presentation and communication skills.
  • Demonstratedexperience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and studentenvironment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Figure Drawing - includesintroductory figure drawing, anatomy, and drawing the figure in anenvironmental and/or conceptual context.
  • Fundamentals of Typography - introductorytypography and graphic design course as it applies to Communication Arts usingtraditional and digital tools.
  • Concept Drawing - includestraditional and digital methods for creating original characters andenvironments based on assigned prompts, narratives, or larger conceptualuniverses.
  • Sequential Imaging - includesvarious traditional and digital methods of creating imagery as it applies to -or is a function of - books, graphic novels, and entertainment industry storyboarding(animation, film, and video games).
  • Illustration: Drawing andPainting - addresses conceptual and technical considerations involved in theuse of various drawing and painting media.
  • VisualStudies: Design - includes an understanding of the relationship between formand effective communication - an awareness and appreciation for visual imageryas a tool for the transmission of information and ideas.
