Position Summary

This part-time volunteer position in Historic Trades reports to the Director of Education. This position is responsible for familiarizing Old Salem's guests with the history, functions, and customs of the historical Salem craftspeople and trades. The volunteer should be an excellent storyteller with a knack for customer service and some basic understanding of the historic trade that they will volunteer with.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

  • Greeting and welcoming guests to venues within Old Salem.
  • Respond to questions and provide pertinent information to visitors.
  • Ensure all site visitors feel welcome and experience a memorable journey.
  • Maintain a professional and positive demeanor with visitors and staff members.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and historical accuracy of the space to which you are assigned.
  • Assist with shop set-up and clean-up.
  • Assist with behind-the-scenes organization and maintenance of inventory.
  • Discuss the Moravian history and particular Trade-specific content with visitors.
  • After the first 72 hours of service, the volunteer may participate in limited trades work and maintenance of shop tools. This trades work will generally be restricted to specific tasks and assignments given by the appropriate Building Lead.
  • After the first 140 hours of service, the volunteer may be loaned historical clothing for which they will maintain cleanliness and accuracy.
Qualifications

WHAT YOU NEED:
  • Must be age 16 or older.
  • Must have prior experience with reading, researching, and presenting.
  • Must have prior knowledge or experience with the trade you will be volunteering for.
  • Capacity to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Excellent conversational skills and a friendly, approachable disposition.
  • Ability to work on occasional Saturdays.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, squat, kneel, push, pull, crawl, and sit on low chairs.
  • The work is conducted year-round in all weather conditions.
  • May require working near a fire.
  • Must be able to climb stairs.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to sit or stand for long periods.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but can occasionally be loud.
