Job Summary

Provides an itinerant tutorial program to regular and special education students who are unable to attend school due to medical reasons or because of assignment to home instruction. Teaches elementary, secondary and life skills curricula, as appropriate, to students in hospitals, foster care residential settings or their homes in an effort to assist the students in maintaining academic progress in their educational programs. Interacts in a cooperative effort with medical and other professional personnel in order to meet the specialized needs of the student population served.

Essential Functions

  • Performs instructional work in the home, hospital or foster care residential environment for students having medical problems of a convalescent, chronic or permanent nature or students assigned through due process proceedings or the Individual Education Plan (IEP) to instruction in the home, which may also involve online learning; reviews students' personal and medical history; establishes standards and goals for educational programs in light of individual needs, medical, psychological or emotional limitations, handicaps and capabilities.
  • Participates in the multi-disciplinary team process of student evaluations for special education students; collaborates with other professional and paraprofessional staff in the development of the IEP for each student; monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of the IEP.
  • Plans and prepares lesson plans for instructional sessions which are consistent with the planned course of study for the student's grade or the IEP; provides instructional guidance and assistance in the various curriculum areas; conveys classroom assignments and necessary materials; monitors student progress.
  • Stay abreast of new developments; pedagogy and improvements in teaching aids, textbooks and materials; attends faculty meetings to discuss educational issues.
  • Conducts parent conferences; informs families of student progress; provides support to parents and students in an effort to ease emotional and social pressures; encourages and works with parents and students in an effort to integrate the student into community life.
  • Interacts with hospital and residential staff regarding student conditions and needs; attends staff meetings; provides written feedback to staff regarding a student's academic progress.
  • Maintains grade and progress reports and other required records.
Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree program at an accredited college or university.
  • Two years of full-time, paid, professional special education teaching experience.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Demonstrated knowledge of:
    • modern methods, principles and practices of elementary and secondary education.
    • the theories and principles of child growth and development with emphasis on the relation of medical, mental and social handicaps to the psychological development of the child.
    • the special techniques, therapy, methods and materials available for enhancing the instruction of children with medical, metal or social problems.
  • Demonstrated ability to :
    • provide instruction on an individual or small group basis to children.
    • select and organize curriculum content and to apply appropriate instructional methods in the subjects being tutored.
    • use and apply audio-visual and web-based technology to teaching situations.
    • prepare, plan and teach lesson plans.
    • communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
    • establish and maintain working relationships.


Certificates/Licenses
  • Possession of a valid Commonwealth of Pennsylvania certificate to teach the Mentally and/or Physically Handicapped.
  • Possession of a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
