Position Title: Forestry Technician (Visitor Use Monitoring) AmeriCorps Member - 680 HR

Position Summary:

The Idaho Panhandle National Forests is recruiting three 680 Hour Forestry Technicians for Visitor Use Monitoring, AmeriCorps Members beginning in May and lasting through early September 2024. Incumbent will primarily be making contacts in the field at monitoring stations that involve six hours of surveys plus drive time to survey locations on the Coeur d' Alene River, Sandpoint, Priest Lake, and Bonners Ferry Ranger districts. This placement will typically work a maxi flex schedule of either four ten-hour days or five eight-hour days per week Friday through Monday.

Duties and Responsibilities:

This position will involve conducting surveys to the recreating public on forest service roads, day use areas, and campgrounds (90%). Surveys will be conducted for 6 hours, including a 30-minute lunch, as well as drive time to and from the survey site. Individuals will have to be comfortable in using mobile devices and making contacts with the public. Most surveys will be done independently, but there might be some instances where you will be teamed up with one other individual. There may be a few days (less than 10%) when there will be no survey days. On those occasions, you might be asked to work with trail or recreation crews for the day.

Required Qualifications:

  • Willingness to work independently or as a small team.
  • Good verbal communication skills
  • Ability to learn how to use Survey 123 on tablet devices.
  • A positive attitude
  • Current driver's license
  • Ability to work outdoors in remote settings and inclement weather.


Desired Qualifications:
  • Attention to detail.
  • Coursework in recreation management, forestry, natural resources or related field.
  • A strong interest in resource management.


Duty Location:

There will be two duty stations available for these positions.
  • Duties performed out of the Coeur d' Alene River Ranger District in Coeur d' Alene (CDA), Idaho. CDA is a full-service tourist's town in the summer with all needed amenities and is located within Kootenai County with a population of 190,000. There will be a substantial housing bonus that can be used for rental throughout the summer.
  • Duties performed out of the Sandpoint Ranger District will complete surveys on the three northern districts of Bonners Ferry, Sandpoint, and Priest Lake. Sandpoint is a full-service tourist town in the summer with all needed amenities and is located within Bonner County. There will be a substantial housing bonus that can be used for rental throughout the summer.

Terms of Employment:

Three AmeriCorps members will complete a term of service (length dependent on commitment of hours), starting in May 2024 through early September 2024. The member must complete a minimum of 680 service hours by the end of their term. The members will receive a 30-minute lunch each day and this lunch break does not count towards AmeriCorps member service hours. Training will not exceed 20% of total member service hours.

Program Benefits:

$10,880 living allowance dispersed on a monthly basis and upon successful completion of program requirements, education award amount of $2626.27. This position also includes a housing fund of $10,000 and a gear fund of $500.

The living allowance and education award are taxable. Members are responsible for providing their own food. Service eligibility is contingent upon the results of a criminal and driving background check.
