Summary

Under general supervision, is responsible for operating and maintaining various types of light to heavy equipment used in the construction and maintenance of County roadways, drainage structures, and associated rights of way (see list under "Working Conditions" below); performs full range of construction and maintenance related tasks at journeyman level; and performs related duties as required.

Multiple Positions Open at these Work locations:1. Southton (9874 Southton Rd)
2. Cagnon (6415 Cagnon Rd)
3. Judson (17310 Judson Rd)


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operates various types of equipment including, but not limited to, mowers, shredders, fork lifts, sweepers, rollers, loaders, fuel trucks, and dump trucks used in construction and maintenance of roadways, drainage structures and parking facilities
  • Prepares and applies asphalt using both mechanized and non-mechanized equipment
  • Completes service checks, maintenance and minor repairs of various pieces of road equipment
  • Performs various safety related procedures at construction sites, including installation of various types of traffic control devices and directing traffic
  • Completes administrative logs, forms and reports
  • Assists in providing on-the-job training to less experienced and lower level employees
  • May exercise technical supervision over employees in the performance of road construction and maintenance
  • Performs related duties as required

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduation from High School or General Education Development (GED) certificate, and two (2) years' experience in operating light to medium road construction equipment or pavement marking equipment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Knowledge of mechanical operations of road equipment; knowledge of operation and maintenance of equipment used in road construction, maintenance, striping and pavement marking
  • Skill in the operation of hand tools; knowledge of safety standards and practices; skill in performing mathematical calculations
  • Ability to perform minor mechanical repairs; ability to utilize independent judgment. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions including construction plans; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, County employees, and the general public
  • Must have a valid Texas Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
  • Must secure and maintain a favorable background investigation and clearance
  • Must secure and maintain a pre-employment physical and a pre-employment drug screen test
  • May be required to work more than 40 hours during the workweek
  • Required to be on-call 24-hours a day

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:
  • Constantly working in outdoor conditions
  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions
  • Work involves moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, hazardous material, flammable and toxic fumes (battery acids, cleaning solvents, gasoline, etc.) rough terrain, poisonous plants, insects and animal bites, dirt, dust, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises
  • Frequently moves items weighing up to 10-25 pounds
  • Occasionally moves items weighing up to 50-100 pounds
  • Frequently communicates with others; must be able to exchange accurate information
  • Constantly moves about equipment, building, and vehicles
  • Constantly positions self to perform essential functions
  • Constantly operates tools and equipment
  • The following equipment is representative of the size, weight and complexity appropriate for Equipment Operator II: Roller(Sheep Foot, Flat Wheel, Pneumatic (4000 lbs. or more), Crack Sealer, Back-Hoe/Front End Loader, Pothole Patch Truck, Truck Mounted Stripers and Hand Liners, Large Sweeper(Street), Oil Distributor(under 2000 gallons), Wheel Loader(less than 3 cubic yards), Tractor Mowers (5-7 gang, slope, Batwing and Boom), and Herbicide Truck.
  • Temporary assignment to higher or lower level equipment may occur when necessary.
