GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB
Performs basic manual work in the maintenance of the Animal Shelter facility and grounds, cleaning the animal enclosures, feeding and watering animals held in the shelter facility, assisting with euthanasia, receiving, processing and caring for animals, assisting the public, preparing and maintaining files and records, does related work as required. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Animal Enforcement Lieutenant.

Description of Work

Essential Job Functions

  • Disinfects and cleans animal housing areas including kennels, cages and shelter grounds.
  • Performs general custodial and grounds keeping duties; sweeps and mops floors; picks up trash on shelter grounds; removes trash from facilities; mows grass and trims shrubs; cleans restrooms; cleaning trucks.
  • Accompanies citizens touring the facilities to view animals; responds to questions concerning the animals in the shelter (health, disposition, etc.); educates the public on the responsibility involved in owning a pet and adoption processes.
  • Assists with the euthanization of animals as required; maintains appropriate records on drug use; bags and disposes of carcass.
  • Assists the public with owner released animals and adoptions.
  • May be required to work outside normal work hours in on-call and rotating shift including feeding and cleaning of the animals impounded at the Animal Shelter during weekends and holidays.

Performs other work as required.

Minimum Education and Experience

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or GED and minimal experience in caring for animals, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Valid driver's license in the State of North Carolina.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Thorough knowledge of public health rabies control laws, animal collection and disposal methods.
  • General knowledge of laws and regulations related to Animal Control.
  • General knowledge of the care and feeding of small and large domesticated animals and necessary safety precautions.
  • Some knowledge of animal breeds.
  • Some knowledge of common animal diseases.
  • Basic computer knowledge is needed along with the skill in the use of physical means.
  • Ability to handle animals safely.
  • Ability to carry out oral and written directions.
  • Ability to read, interpret and explain rules, regulations and procedures.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
