Overview:

YMCA Camp Santa Maria is seeking leaders to guide our amazing campers at our picturesque overnight camp nestled in the heart of the Rocky Mountains near Grant, CO.

We are looking for enthusiastic, outdoors-loving Cabin Leads who are passionate about connecting children to the natural world, helping children try new activities and persevere through challenges, You will help ensure our campers are supported in creating transformative summer camp experiences for campers. Our Cabin Leads provide leadership, direction, and supervision to their campers as well as to the greater camp community. Along with the Program Instructors and the Teen Mentors, Cabin Leads facilitate camp activities in large and small groups in a rustic/wilderness setting.

Beyond coordinating and mentoring some of our camp population, our ideal candidates understand the power of community and teamwork and are eager to collaborate with and support the rest of our 65-person staff throughout the summer. We are looking for staffers who have an "I've got this" mindset, who show initiative and a solutions-minded attitude whether they are dealing with a homesick camper, conflict resolution and any other camper interpersonal opportunities that come up.

Pay Rate: $420.00/week. This position requires you to live at camp. Room and board are included. Leadership training begins May 21, 2024.



Responsibilities:
  • Maintain a professional presence for YMCA Camp Santa Maria through appropriate staff and camper interactions.
  • Supervises a group of 10-12 campers in a cabin and reports directly to the Head Cabin Lead.
  • Adheres to program standards and expectations including safety and cleanliness standards.
  • Ensure safety and well being of all children under their supervision.
  • Collaborates and works with Head Cabin Leads and the Program Instructors as needed.
  • Models relationship-building skills for campers and staff.
  • Problem solves, communicates, and documents camper behavioral issues as they arise, and passes them off to Head Cabin Lead if they escalate.
  • Incorporate the mission, philosophy, and 5 core values of the YMCA of Northern Colorado in all communication with participants and staff-members.
  • Other job duties as assigned.


Qualifications:
  • 18+ years old.
  • High school graduate or equivalent; one year or more of college preferred.
  • Previous experience working with children ages 7 - 17 years preferred.
  • Experience preferred in one or more of the following areas: outdoor skills, archery, arts and crafts, dance, drama, boating, camping, songs/music, skits, sports, aquatics, recreational games, etc.
  • Completion of: Child Abuse Prevention for Supervisory Staff, Staff Training, WFA, CPR, AED, Bloodborne Pathogens. (We provide this as part of staff training week) Lifeguard certification is a plus.
  • Previous experience with diverse populations preferred.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Ability to plan, lead and participate in a range of activities in a variety of outdoor/indoor settings.

Physical Demands

Camp life can be physically and emotionally challenging. You will be asked to function at 8200 ft of elevation, in a variety of summer mountain weather ranging from snow to highs in the 90's with potential strong thunderstorms. On an average day you will walk 3-5 miles.
