Job Summary

The Wireless Research group within InterDigital's Research and Innovation (R&I) organization is responsible for leading InterDigital's North American next generation wireless research projects. Our charter is to identify future technology needs, develop and learn from proof-of-concept prototypes, and innovate around a system focus. Today this team is at the leading edge of 6G research.

InterDigital is seeking a highly motivated wireless engineer to work within our technology research and development team to help design, model and simulate 6G technologies. The selected candidate will have in depth experience developing 3GPP system and link level simulations in a MATLAB environment, and use of these tools for analyzing performance and viability of new concepts. This role requires close interaction across teams within the Wireless Lab, presenting work internally, and drafting documents for external contributions and presentations. Technology areas of relevant experience for this position are focused on the 3GPP Physical Layer and include: MIMO, Beamforming, Channel modeling, Waveform design, Modulation and Coding, and application of AI/ML to wireless.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Carry out cutting-edge research in physical layer, MAC layer and air-interface design for next generation mobile communication systems
  • Research, analyze and evaluate cellular systems and develop wireless protocols and algorithm designs using theoretical analysis, link-level or system-level simulations for beyond 5G / 6G
  • Perform theoretical analysis of channel models, use mathematical models and empirical data to accurately represent the propagation characteristics of wireless channels. Create and implement channel models for various environments. Analyze simulation results, perform statistical analysis on quantified channel behavior.
  • Prepare technical reports, presentations, and/or technical papers surveying state of the art, describing design and development efforts, and presenting evaluation results
  • Work with other team members and publish findings in leading scientific conferences and journals
  • Drive technology generation and disclosure writing and supporting patent applications and downstream support
  • Assist (back-office support) in developing 3GPP standards contributions as necessary
  • Engage in pre-standards efforts, support university and industry collaborations

Qualifications
  • M.S., or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering or related field (Ph.D. preferred)
  • 10+ years of work experience post Ph.D. (or 14+ years of work experience post M.S.) in the field of wireless communications
  • Experience in link level (L1/PHY) and/or system level (L1/PHY, L2/MAC) simulations and proficiency with MATLAB is required
  • Strong background and experience in 3GPP and cellular systems, wireless protocol development and wireless communications fundamentals: mmWave, sub-THz, beamforming, RF/EM propagation, channel modeling, Advanced waveform design. Knowledge of 3GPP stochastic channel model and Near-Field is a plus
  • Research experience in Beyond 5G or 6G with a track record of peer-reviewed publications
