Job Responsibilities

Under general supervision of the Chief of Public Safety. Must be able to exercise sound judgement and discretion applying all relevant state, federal, college, and licensure policies, procedures, and regulations.

  • Performs patrol officer duties to enforce traffic, commercial motor carrier, environmental health and/or criminal laws.
  • Enforces state/county/municipal laws, patrols campus properties (on foot or in motor vehicle), secures buildings, equipment, and other property on the campus.
  • Conducts investigations of criminal offenses, traffic accidents and related infractions, and disturbances, conducts traffic and assist with crowd control.
  • Keeps records and makes reports regarding activities.
  • Provides guidance/assistance to students, faculty, staff, and visitors to DTC, responding to complaints/reports of violations and requests for assistance.
  • Completes required training as required by the College and South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy to maintain certification as a Class I Law Enforcement Officer.
  • Supervises gate personnel assigned to shift.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum and Additional Requirements

High School Diploma.
  • Knowledge of proper law enforcement officer behavior and role.
  • Knowledge of modern law enforcement techniques and procedures.
  • Knowledge of how to collect and preserve evidence.
  • Knowledge of the legal rights of both suspects and law enforcement personnel.
  • Knowledge of the laws one is responsible for enforcing.
  • Knowledge of the functions and interrelationships of other law enforcement agencies.
  • Skill in the operation of law enforcement vehicles, weapons, and communications equipment.
  • Ability to correctly evaluate situations and make good decisions.
  • Ability to deal firmly, yet tactfully, with the general public.
  • Ability to effectively interview witnesses and suspects.
  • Ability to read and comprehend written materials.
  • Ability to write clearly and effectively.

Preferred Qualifications

Certifications from the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy in accordance with Section 23-23-40 of the Code of Laws of South Carolina 1976, as Amended, to include certification as a State Constable within 30 days of hire.

Additional Comments

Must have a current valid driver's license. Must be able to move up to 25 pounds.
