Description

Purpose of Position:

With an annually changing fleet of vessels, ranging from small schooners to mid-century motor yachts, day sailors to a classic Americas Cup chase boat, Mystic Seaport Museum requires several full time captains during the operational season (May - August); with possibility of off-season work. Captains will be able to safely operate a wide variety of small yachts, including sail, while delivering exceptional customer service with a high degree of professionalism.

Essential Functions:

  • Willingness to transition between vessels in a single day.
  • Experience with day charter trade, multi day voyaging experience preferred.
  • Ability to lead charters independently, or crew with others as needed.
  • Maintain appropriate professional relationships with others in the field, particularly on the Mystic River.
  • Enjoy interacting with museum guests, volunteers, and general public to help drive charter business.
  • Ability to use mobile payment processing.
  • Good natured attitude in a highly fluid environment.
  • Willingness to take responsibility of vessels under ones command and see to preparations including but not limited to:
  • Logging daily engine checks
  • Cleanliness of vessel
  • Provisioning
  • General guest preparations


Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:
  • 50 ton or larger USCG license (Auxiliary Sail Endorsement preferred)
  • Willingness to undergo scheduled and random drug testing with ongoing clean results.
  • High degree of skill in handling vessels of varying sizes.
  • Must possess a thorough understanding of USCG regulations as they apply to personnel, vessels, and vessel management.
  • Weekend, evening, and holiday work is expected.
  • Strong social and interpersonal skills to interact with and ensure great experiences for vessel guests.
  • A high degree of flexibility regarding scheduling.
  • Ability to be on call as needed.
  • Willingness to operate other Museum vessels as needed.
  • Experience aboard traditional vessels, both sail and power, as well as modern boats.
  • Ability to interact in a professional manner with guests, volunteers, staff, and all others.

Special Skills:
  • Knowledge of Mystic Seaport, the Mystic River and Fishers Island Sound.
  • Some combination of experience with multiday voyaging, yacht trade, windjammer fleet, day sail and/or charters

Physical Requirements:
  • Job requires bending, lifting, climbing and prolonged physical activity in all weather conditions
  • Position requires an ability to maintain high levels of visual and mental concentration for extended periods of time.
  • Position requires positive interaction with the public.
  • The nature of the work involved requires extended periods of time outdoors in a variety weather conditions.
  • Must be able to access boats, floats, and bilges.
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
