The Estimator is responsible for working both independently and collaboratively (with executive management and project teams) to estimate project costs for firm fixed-price bids, design-build, proposals and change orders. The Estimator s job is to leverage field experience, industry knowledge and solid analytical skills to prepare accurate quantity take-offs. Fundamental to this role is the ability to make sound assumptions and identify gaps in construction documents based on constructability reviews.


Key Responsibilities


  • Review, interpret, and accurately estimate scopes of work as describe in the project documents by completing a thorough analysis of drawings and specifications.
  • Responsible for all aspects of estimating including an overall project understanding, phasing, restrictions, constructability, risks, and opportunities
  • Perform detailed project cost estimate using estimating software such as HCSS.
  • Prepare take-off and pricing for civil disciplines
  • Development of preliminary project schedule and how it factors into the overall estimate
  • Attend pre-bid conferences as requested.
  • Participate in putting final bid together on bid day including subcontractor scope reviews.
  • Solicit and review subcontractor and vendor scopes and pricing for specialty trades.
  • Review progress and construction documents for constructability. Lead and participate in discussion regarding alternate detail and materials for specific areas or trades.
  • Provide and present value engineering options and costs.
  • Provide and present estimating productions and scheduling.
  • Coordinate administrative staff in sending documents to vendors.
  • Perform any other duties assigned.
  • Contribute to Design-Build SOQ s and proposals including project narratives.


Education


  • College degree in Engineering or Construction Management or equivalent years experience.


Qualifications of the Position


  • 5 years experience estimating within heavy civil construction industry preferred.
  • Previous experience with MTA agencies (NYCTA/LIRR/MNR/etc.), NYCDDC, and/or local utilities (Con Edison, DEP, etc.).
  • Local knowledge of the industry.
  • Must have exceptional written and oral communication skills
  • Highly proficient in Excel and HCSS estimating software. Knowledge of P6 and AutoCAD a plus.
  • Ability to make decisions, work independently and coordinate estimating colleagues.
  • Ability to meet critical project deadline, willingness to coordinate and work as a Team Member.
  • Must be able to handle multiple projects at one time.
