SUMMARY

The Groundskeeping Manager ("Gerente de Jardineria") responsible for managing the activities of workers that are engaged in maintaining the landscaping of the property. Ensures that equipment and property are maintained in proper working condition and that employees are always working safely. Responsible for landscape activities at The Lodge, as well as some other satellite commercial and residential properties. Usual and ordinary activities include supervision of landscape staff, maintenance of existing hardscape and softscape, identifying and solving challenges, and administrative responsibilities including purchasing, hiring, and training of landscape staff, payroll, and employee performance evaluations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Effectively attracts, retains, motivates, trains, empowers, and maintains accountability for the Groundskeeping Department staff.
  • Inspects grounds and equipment and irrigation systems for required maintenance and schedules and performs repairs, as necessary.
  • Detects and takes appropriate measures to eradicate diseases affecting lawns, plants, and trees.
  • Responsible for procuring required tools, equipment, and supplies.
  • Provides or arranges transportation of employees, as necessary, to different properties.
  • Successfully maintains plants and trees.
  • Trouble-shoots both system issues and horticulture.
  • Relocates/transplants various sizes and species of trees.
  • Recommends the selection of planting color based on seasonal changes.
  • Coordinates with Director of Engineering and other hotel operators in support of project management.
  • Inspects completed work to ensure it conforms to property standards.
  • Establishes or adjusts work procedures to meet production schedules.
  • Maintains a professional and courteous demeanor to our guests and co-workers.
  • Reports major defects to the Director of Engineering in a timely manner.
  • Identifies health and safety hazards and take necessary steps for their correction.
  • Responsible for interviewing and hiring of new staff.
  • Approves time off for payroll purposes.
  • Prepares employee performance evaluations.
  • Conducts safety training and actively participates in maintaining a safe work environment.
  • Attends property Staff and Safety Meetings.
  • Performs additional duties and responsibilities as directed by the leadership team.


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university or any equivalent. Fields of study such as landscape design, turf management, and business preferred.
  • Minimum of 4 years of management experience required.
  • A combination of experience, education, and/or training may be substituted for either requirement.
  • Knowledge of cultivation, weed control, seeding, and planting of trees, seed orchards, and nursing beds.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of landscape design.
  • Knowledge of soil conditions for the propagation of lawns, shrubs, trees, and flowers.
  • Knowledge of training/supervisory techniques and equal employment/employee opportunity policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of labor relations and applicable union contracts.
  • Ability to instruct, evaluate, and supervise employees.
  • Ability to monitor and evaluate performance to assess efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Ability to make material, time, and cost estimates on proposed landscape projects and evaluate bids and contracts.
  • Experience running a shift, scheduling, performance management, problem-solving, running day-to-day operations, hospitality & customer service skills a plus.
  • Previous similar position in a hotel or similar industry is a plus.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and always maintain a friendly, professional, team-oriented, positive demeanor and diplomatic attitude, especially under stress or challenges.
  • Ability to be poised under pressure with continued smiles and maintains a highly diplomatic attitude with challenging guests and under stressful circumstances.
  • Ability to stand, kneel, squat for prolonged periods of time, up to and including, the entire shift and lift up to 25 lbs.
  • The following position will be filled in accordance with the process set forth in California Labor Code Section 2810.8 and San Diego Municipal Code 311.0101 et. seq.
