Job Summary

Provide general assistance in various craft skills required to construct, repair, and maintain plant equipment, utilities, buildings and related structures and train on various equipment and systems in plant. Employs training and experience in the various craft skills required to complete simple assignments and to assist in the performance of more highly skilled tasks. Sets up, adjusts, operates, and maintains shop tools to include Summit vertical mill with Fagor programable controls, Summit engine lathe, Mitts & Merrill key sitter, Horizonal mill, and other shop tools. Must be able to weld, fabricate, use oxygen and acetylene cutting and plasma arc. Operates and maintains portable power tools and standard hand tools. Occasionally operates fork trucks. Continuously trains to a high level of proficiency.

Job Description

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provides machinist support services for all plant areas.
    • Responsible for creating and maintaining the necessary drawings associated with spare parts. Responsible for maintaining appropriate spare parts inventory.
    • Responsible for checking steel and tooling inventories and placing requisitions for ordering the necessary supplies.
    • Helps maintain and repair mechanical equipment throughout the plant.
    • Assists with the installation, maintenance, and repair of mechanical equipment throughout the plant.
    • Be able to precision measure using calipers, mics, pi tape, dial indicators, etc.
    • Electrode welding and acetylene torch cutting.
    • Aligning chains and sprockets.
    • Inspecting and replacing belts, chains, etc.
    • Rebuilding valves, simple mechanical drives, and similar devices.
    • Fabricating structures, braces, equipment, etc. from steel, sheet metal or wood.
    • Pipefitting: screwed, flanged, and glued pipe and fittings for air, water, hydraulic and steam systems.
    • Rigging with chain falls, jacks, forklifts, cranes, etc.
    • Painting: surface preparation through cleanup.

    3. Maintains daily work logs.

    Manufactures parts or equipment as specified by the Mechanical Maintenance Supervisor.

    4. Tests repaired or newly installed equipment.

    Replaces guards, floor grates, etc., and removes all tools, parts, rags, etc. upon completion of assignment.

    5. Follows checkout procedure when removing items from the storeroom.

    Demonstrates a familiarity of regulatory and company safety issues and safe working habits.

    6. Consistently practices safe working habits and actively works to promote safety to others.

    7. Assures completion of work assignments when working alone or with assistance from other Maintenance Technicians.

    8. Demonstrates the ability to independently work on shift.

    Assist with the training of Maintenance Technicians in troubleshooting, repair and maintenance of plant equipment.

    9. Performs other duties as assigned.

    Working Conditions:

    Works in all inside and outside areas of the plant and is often exposed to heat, cold, inclement weather, grease, oil, and dirty working conditions. Work is performed while walking and standing or climbing a considerable portion of the time, often in awkward or strained positions. Routinely uses testing devices and standard hand tools. Employee works directly under the supervision of the Reliability Supervisor or higher. Frequently operates electrode welder, acetylene torch, portable power tools, shop equipment, forklift, and other mobile equipment. Must successfully pass the company's forklift, aerial work platform, and mobile crane operator's test. Will be required to fill in as needed to fill vacancies on shift and may be required to rotate on shift. Must be able to work overtime as required.
    • Must be able to work in confined spaces.
    • Must be able to work rotating shifts, overtime and be on call as required.
    • Must be able to wear hearing protection and respirator required for task being performed.
    • Must have the ability to stoop, bend, kneel, and work in heights.
    • Must have the ability to operate heavy equipment such as man-lifts and portable cranes.
    • Must have ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

    Knowledge/Skills :

    High School Diploma or GED, good mechanical aptitude, ability to work with others as a team, and completion of industrial maintenance training required.

    A minimum of five years of machinist experience. Two years of the machinist experience can be substituted with completion of formal education from an accredited college or technical center.
