Accounts Maintenance Clerk/Payroll Backup


Job Details

Under the supervision of the Tax Collector, the Accounts Maintenance and Payroll Backup Clerk accepts and processes payments from the public for tax bills, water bills, and special assessments, and performs related duties in the Treasury Office. Working with the Payroll Coordinator, the Accounts Maintenance and Payroll Backup Clerk performs duties related to administration of payroll for the City of East Providence.

General Responsibilities

Provides customer service in a professional manner to taxpayers and customers.

Processes and records payments from the public for tax bills, water bills, and special assessments using a computerized accounting system.

Verifies cash, checks, and receipts, balances cash drawer daily, and prepares daily deposit.

Responds to telephone and email requests for detailed information regarding tax procedures, interest charges, tax sales, water billings, etc.

Researches and prepares certified municipal lien requests.

Serves as a liaison between the Treasury and Water Divisions for customers who seek information related to water services.

Administers and processes payroll through ADP and related payroll platforms (as the primary backup to the Payroll Coordinator).

Collaborates with payroll clerks to update employee pay and related processes (as the primary backup to the Payroll Coordinator).

Performs related work as required.

Desirable Abilities, Knowledge, and Skills

Knowledge of accounting procedures and regulations related to taxation.

Strong math skills.

Strong verbal and written communication skills (Spanish and Portuguese preferred).

Experience using computer applications and platforms for tax collection and/or accounting.

Experience engaging with the general public in a customer service role.

Experience using a software platform such as ADP to process payroll.

Reliable, organized, accurate and pays close attention to detail.

Minimum Qualifications

High School diploma or equivalent

Three years' experience in tax collection, bookkeeping, accounting, or a related service.

Three years' experience providing customer service in a municipal, retail, or corporate setting.
