The Opportunity

  • Serve a diverse Group of operating businesses with approximately $800 million in annual revenues within a public Fortune 1000 manufacturer of consumer and industrial products
  • Position based in the Cleveland, OH area hybrid role
  • Group Corporate Counsel with two direct reports (one lawyer (Commercial Agreements Counsel), one paralegal); resources available from corporate HQ

  • Reports to Group President with dotted-line reporting to parent Associate General Counsel

Specific Responsibilities

  • Drafting, reviewing, and negotiating a wide range of agreements and contracts on behalf of the various Group companies, with the assistance of Commercial Agreements Counsel.
  • Working alongside and for other departments within the various companies, including HR, IT, EH&S, R&D, marketing and sales, and advising those partners on legal and regulatory risks.
  • Reviewing advertising, marketing, and labeling materials to ensure that they comply with legal requirements, both for industrial and consumer markets, including online sales.
  • Conducting a preliminary review of IP materials and working with outside counsel to apply for patents, copyrights, and trademarks.
  • Facilitate interaction among Groups on compliance directives and training from corporate compliance department.
  • Oversight of the daily activities and department goals of one lawyer and one paralegal.

The Profile

  • JD with 10+ years generalist experience in-house experience very helpful
  • Contract review experience is required
  • Employment law experience is required
  • Experience with internal restructurings, consolidations very helpful
  • Service attitude/responsiveness is absolutely essential
  • Business-focused relationship builder who builds trust at all levels of the organization
  • Able to change gears quickly and provide service to a wide range of different needs, business models, and personality types
  • Willing to decide/move forward without always having all the info reasonable risk tolerance (vs perfectionism slowing down decision processes within the business)
  • Highly proactive and self-motivated, you take ownership of your actions and can function without significant input; but, also know when to get support
  • Purposeful, results-focused with well-developed prioritization skills

  • Effectively manages a high volume of work through various methods of organization, project and task management, and prioritization as needs evolve

  • Willing to travel ~10% within the US, with infrequent international travel (maybe once a year)
