Summary

This position provides care and supervision for the youth residents of the JDC and shelter in a secure setting. This position is under the general supervision of the Detention Supervisor or in the absence of, Detention Officer Acting Supervisor and/or his/her designee.

Definition and Examples of Work

Provide care and supervision for youth residents; complete all duties as necessary dependent upon shift and maintain necessary documentation

  • Maintain security of facility through scheduled resident counts, room checks and searches, monitoring residents and visits, restraining residents, when necessary, through physical or mechanical means, and room and building security.
  • Prepare and maintain confidential records and reports as needed; complete incident reports, shift summaries, and communicate information to incoming shift members.
  • Admit and release residents to/from the facility and complete intakes/release/ intakes.
  • Teach and counsel juveniles on various matters (e.g., personal hygiene, manners, care of clothing, discipline, health needs, relationships, management of checkbooks)
  • Coordinate medical and court appointments and transport residents.
  • Correctly dispense medication to juveniles.
  • Fill commissary orders.
  • Assist the classroom teachers as Para-professional.
  • Conduct monthly tornado and fire drills.

Complete additional support functions
  • Maintain the cleanliness of facility; perform minor maintenance and housekeeping duties, includes, but not limited to, laundry and oversight of pods and pod storage rooms.
  • Participate staff meetings and complete required training each year.
  • Complete monthly clothing inventory.
  • Perform data entry and filling as needed to maintain records and databases.
  • Complete police reports for runaway juveniles.

Requirements

  • Excellent verbal and written English language skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Proficient in the use of customers, Microsoft Office Suite, and/or related software.
  • Proficient understanding of clerical procedures and systems such as recordkeeping and filing.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions.
  • Ability to analyze situations and make sound judgments as needed in daily supervision of resident activities.
  • Valid Driver's license
  • Must meet all the qualifications regarding facility staff for licensure according to the regulations of the Kansas Department of Health and Environment and the Kansas Department of Children and Families.
  • Ability to obtain CPR and First Aid certifications
  • Ability to obtain Defensive Driving certificate
  • 21 years old
  • Occasional travel
  • Frequent overtime
  • Regular and reliable attendance onsite at work location.
