POSITION SUMMARY:

The primary roles and responsibilities for this position is manual hands-on construction for the railway system and other construction projects bringing the skill of a craftsman within civil construction to build structures. Must be able to work within a team and be a part of maintaining a safe and sound environment that meets requirements within the specifications for each project.

DAILY OVERSIGHT AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist in preparing heavy civil construction sites that includes loading and unloading materials, traffic control, and manual labor that includes digging, preparing sites and other assigned duties.
  • Knowledge and ability to operate power and hand tools and equipment that include but are not limited to electric, pneumatic, hydraulic, gas, and diesel-powered tools. Hand tools are defined as any tool that is operated by hand without electricity or other power source (i.e., hammer, shovel).
  • Must be able to read and understand grade stakes for grade checking and alignment using GPS, lasers, levels, and string line.
  • Ability to correct deviations in track surfaces, alignment and gauge.
  • Must be able to load and unload trucks sorting track material and keep job sites clean and neat at the end of each workday using material staging area that has been assigned for equipment and materials.
  • Utilize tools to cut rails to required length as well as be able to adjust, lift and roll rails.
  • Cleaning of work area that includes install and repair of street and railroad crossings, cut brush/vegetation from a right-of-way, clean/grade and or level ballast on railroad tracks and removal of ice/snow from tracks or switch boxes.
  • Maintain compliance with all railroad rules and regulations under the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) for safe operations.
  • Adhere to and promote safe work practices as determined by the railroad.
  • Participate in group discussions that include crew meetings, job briefings, safety meetings, and process reviews.
  • Other duties, tasks, and responsibilities that may be assigned at any time.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
  • High school diploma or GED preferred but not required.
  • One or more years of heavy highway construction with civil construction preferred but not required.
  • Working knowledge of and familiarity with general construction site safety requirements.
  • Ability to perform routine maintenance and troubleshoot problems on equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and federal and state regulations.
  • Experience with heavy hand tools, and previous work in an outside environment preferred.
  • Must be dependable and have great attention to detail.
  • Ability to follow instructions, apply process/procedures, and communicate to manager and team questions, concerns, and information to maintain production and a safe environment.
  • Must have experience to read, understand, and fulfill requirements of grade stakes.
  • Must be able to pass a pre-offer drug test and will be subject to FRA random drug testing.

Safety Responsibilities:

  • Safety protocols are extremely important to follow.
  • Follow all safety training and procedures displaying clear understanding through demonstration of safe work practices.
  • Refer to and comply with instructions, requests, orders, and information posted within bulletins, memorandums, rules and regulatory guidance/manuals.
  • Must be able to complete and pass requirements for background check and drug screening.
  • Ability to obtain eRailSafe badge approval required.


SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

Position reports to the Foreman and/or Superintendent and is expected to operate under moderate supervisory involvement, depending on the task and the incumbent's knowledge and ability to complete the task. All other staff remain available for information, advice, guidance, or assistance if needed and may provide training, coaching, and feedback as appropriate. This position supervises no employees depending on managerial needs.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The Laborer will frequently stand, walk, climb, and move throughout the workday, use their hands, repeat the same movements, and bend or twist their body while handling products and conducting work. Ability to maneuver on uneven ground. Must be able to lift and carry up to 100 lbs. Frequently move objects up to 65 lbs. Exposed to loud noise with possible exposure to live tracks and trains as well as high voltage areas.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The physical environment requires the employee to work outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. This position works in a very manual work environment within frequent e outdoor facilities.
