General Summary

Help support Parks and Recreation in their mission to enhance the quality of life for all through the stewardship of public land and parks and to provide quality recreational experiences. The City of Charlottesville is seeking qualified candidates for Aquatics Fitness Exercise (Group Exercise Instructor) who are highly motivated and who strive for success by demonstrating Charlottesville's Core Values of Leadership, Trust, Creativity, Respect, and Excellence.The hiring amount is $25.00 - $36.00 an hour for this position. Offer is dependent on qualifications, course type, and internal equity. This is a non-exempt, temporary (variable/limited-hour) position, and is not eligible for city benefits.

Parks & Recreation is offering incentive bonuses for Summer 2024 which includes:

  • $250 Signing Bonus
  • $250 End of Season Bonus - required to hold at least 2 Fitness classes per week over the Summer season; Memorial Day - Labor Day Weekend.
This position leads group exercise classes and/or group-trainings on land or in the water to meet the fitness interests and demands of the community; monitors and educates patrons on fitness and safety, creating a positive wellness environment for customers and guests. Performs other duties as required. Primarily and most frequently, work is performed under direct supervision within one functional area and of a routine nature. Reports to a Parks and Recreation Operations Specialist.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties

  • Teaches scheduled classes, beginning and ending on time; provides adequate warm-up, exercise, stretching and cool-down time;
  • Provides supervisor with written lesson plans of class content for approval;
  • Instructs patrons on effective workout methods; explains proper techniques; demonstrates exercises and teaches appropriate methods to meet class objectives;
  • Communicates effectively, professionally, courteously and thoroughly with the highest regard to the customer;
  • Responsible for keeping accurate records, including incident/accident reports, time records and daily attendance;
  • Prepares equipment, music and handouts for each class as necessary;
  • Keeps management informed of customer and facility needs;
  • Ensures that safety standards are met, department and facility policies are adhered to and reports problems to supervisor;
  • Meets participants before and after class to answer questions and maintains a positive exercise experience;
  • Attends staff meetings and assists in developing ideas for new fitness and wellness programs in order to meet the needs of the recreational facility and/or the community;
  • Performs related duties as required.

Education, Experience and Skills

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Must be 21 years or older by employment start date.
  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma.
  • Minimum of three (3) months of related experience instructing/supervising individuals in the specialized class.
  • Requires possession of CPR/AED/First Aid certification within 3 months of hire date.
  • All staff serving in this role must attend the Parks and Recreation Certification program for Group Exercise Instructors on an annual basis.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Two (2) or more years of experience teaching/instructing classes or supervising a group exercise/fitness program preferred.
  • Possession of one or more certifications by ACSM, NSCA, ACE, AEA, NASM, AFAA, Hydra-Fit or other nationally-recognized organization preferred.
  • OSHA and Blood Borne Pathogen Training preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Thorough knowledge of professional behavior in a recreation environment; ability to maintain order among participants; ability to instruct participants with different learning styles; ability to demonstrate positive customer service skills when communicating with participant and the public; strong safety orientation; demonstrated leadership capabilities and adaptability at the front of a class; ability to move rhythmically to the beat of music including the ability to incorporate optimal usage of cueing, tempo, choreography and safe transitional movements from one pattern to the other; skilled in creating combinations to be taught within the parameters of a class format; working knowledge of human anatomy, kinesiology and training principles; ability to maintain a high degree of energy with the endurance to complete each fitness class; able to perform mathematical computations with speed and accuracy; general knowledge of standard office procedures, practices and equipment.
Physical Conditions & Additional Information

Physical requirements of this position as outlined by the Department of Labor:
MEDIUM: work involves exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, or an amount greater than negligible and up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.

This position may be required to work weekends, nights and/or holidays.

This is a safety sensitive position subject to drug and alcohol testing for pre-employment, reasonable suspicion, post-accident and random testing.

Work may involve exposure to blood-borne pathogens. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
