PURPOSE OF POSITION

This position requires demonstrated competency and increasing independence, knowledge, and ability in performing routine and special assignments in the Maintenance and Grounds Department. Maintains the physical school plant and grounds in a condition of operating excellence so that full educational use of them may always be made.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • At least 3-4 years experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Valid Drivers License
  • Knowledge of standard gardening/landscape work; lawn/tree/shrub care, irrigation ditch requirements and pump maintenance.
  • Knowledge of how to use tools, such as axes, lawnmowers, leaf blowers, saws, hammers, hoes, spades, edger's, chainsaws, small tractor, backhoe, hedge clippers, shovels, pruners, shears and other relevant tools.
  • Knowledge of and/or the ability to learn about plant diseases, insects, chemicals, and the proper methods used to control such undesirable elements.
  • Knowledge and ability to properly prune shade, evergreen and ornamental tree species and have a working knowledge of tree wounds.
  • Safety conscience.
  • Ability to listen, understand, retain, follow, and apply verbal and written instructions.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationship with others.
  • Respond courteously to public inquires; learn and retain specific and general information concerning equipment, functions and campus beautification projects.
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently in the resolution of difficult and/or stressful scheduling issues.

Background Check:

This position will require a complete background check as required by the Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act and candidates must meet the Minimum Standards of Conduct as prescribed in 25 CFR Part 63.12.

Navajo /Indian Preference:

Consideration for employment will be given to Navajo, American Indian or Alaskan Tribal member with the required documentation including the necessary qualifications to meet the minimal requirements of the position. The Navajo/Indian preference law shall apply in all aspects of the position.

CLASSIFICATION

This is a Non-Classified, Non-Exempt position.

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT

This position is hourly and based on 261 contract days.

Note: Notwithstanding the above, this position is subject to possible furlough, or reduction in force under NPS, Inc. Personnel Policies; due to unforeseen reductions in program funding that requires such general program changes.

SUPERVISOR

Primary: Facilities Manager

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
  1. Responsible for maintaining school grounds, lawns and athletic fields including watering, mowing, trimming, pruning trees and cutting down unwanted trees, bushes, removing leaves, pulling weeds, picking up trash and keeping the campus clean.
  2. Rake and remove leaves from sidewalks and other areas.
  3. Apply pesticides, herbicides or chemicals to soil, weeds, plants and other surfaces in accordance with School Policy.
  4. Maintains operations & maintenance of grounds and lawn equipment, including automated irrigation sprinkler systems and low-voltage electrical systems.
  5. Repair sprinklers and assist in the repair of broken water lines.
  6. Clean the ditch by removing weeds.
  7. Performs regular-seasonal reseeding, mowing, trimming, edging of lawn and athletic fields, regularly aerate and fertilize, and apply necessary nutrients to trees, shrubs and flowers.
  8. Assist with maintenance, installation and upgrade of existing underground PVC water delivery system as required.
  9. Assist in all phases of the installation of plant material, sod, lawns and paving material and other projects on campus.
  10. Operate small equipment, gator and variety of hand and power tools/equipment on daily bases. These may also include riding mowers, push mowers, skid loaders, weed eaters, edger's, chain saws, clippers, backpack blowers, sprayers, snow blowers, hand saws and other small tools.
  11. Considerable time spent working outdoors in occasional extreme heat and cold and involves significant time walking, stooping, bending, squatting and lifting heavy objects.
  12. Maintaining athletic fields for game preparation including marking the field.
  13. Snow removal off sidewalks and other areas around the school.
  14. Maintains school dude work orders-record of time, materials, and parts required in completing work assignments.
  15. Complies with local laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish, and waste.
  16. Complies with local, tribal, state, federal guideline in insecticide, herbicide, and rodenticide use.
  17. Be available for standby and emergency response coverage (before and after regular work hours; weekends, and holidays); or weekend rotation.
  18. Supports and efficiently carries out responsibilities in accordance with Navajo Preparatory School Board, Inc. (NPS) Policies and Procedures.
  19. Represents NPS in a manner reflecting professionalism and which enhances community understanding of the program.
  20. Performs assistance with other duties as assigned.

Will be evaluated in accordance with the Navajo Preparatory School Board, Inc. policies and procedures.
