Join our team as a Harvest Vineyard Sampler Intern! This internship offers a unique opportunity to work closely with our Grower Relations team and gain hands-on experience in the winery cellar. The position starts with phenology tracking and field data collection for crop estimates. Leading up to harvest, you'll assist with scouting and sugar sampling, where you'll play a vital role in ensuring the grapes are at their best. The information collected will be instrumental in the overall success of the vintage. The majority of the role involves independent tasks and outdoor work. The transition to the cellar will happen around October/November depending on how the season progresses.
The position begins in June and extends through November (full-time 40-50 hours/week). We prefer full-time availability. However, depending on coursework commitments, we are open to making scheduling accommodations for the right candidate. We're located in Paso Robles, CA (Wisteria Lane facility).
Job Description
Vineyard Responsibilities:
- Extensive data collection including cluster counting for crop forecasting, vineyard monitoring, pest scouting, and phenological data tracking
- Sugar sampling both berries and clusters for grape maturity and phenolics
- Ability to utilize and operate tools and equipment used in agricultural applications including RTV/ATV and hand tools
- Assist in running lab analysis: brix, pH and TA
Cellar Responsibilities:
- Transition to the cellar will be 6 days/week and up to 12-hour days
- Preparation for Harvest: working with chemicals, pumps and hoses to sanitize tanks, bins and other equipment used for wine work
- Harvest Assistance: performing punch downs, pump-overs, ingredient additions, processing and wine transfers
- Barrel Work: receiving and labelling new barrels, empty barrel maintenance and assisting with topping of barrels
Qualifications
- A valid Driver's License and clean driving record is required for company vehicle use
- Harvest and wine industry experience is recommended but not required
- Preferably a degree (or currently enrolled) in an Agriculture or Wine & Viticulture program but not required
- Possess a positive attitude; strong communication skills; detail-oriented; comfortable working alone as well as effectively with others
- Must be a self-starter with strong work ethic this position involves working independently for extended periods with the expectations to remain on task
- Ability to lift 50 pounds
- Ability to walk long distances and/or hills in a variety of hot and cold climates for a large portion of the days
- Flexible and willing to work varying shifts, overtime, and weekends
Pay Rate: $18.00 per hour, plus potential overtime pay.
