JOB GOAL: To assist in fostering a love for reading and learning among students. Manage the school library, curate collections of books and resources, and under supervision, provide instruction to students and instructional support to teachers.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school graduation or equivalent with training in library procedures and two years of clerical experience.
  • Library or classroom experience preferred.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills are required.
  • The preferred candidate has a love of literacy and reading
ABILITY TO:
  • Use electronic library inventory systems, email, and other necessary office software or systems.
  • Organize and manage time for a structured learning environment.
  • Collaborate with elementary-level library assistants.
  • Establish a cooperative working relationship with students and adults.
  • Demonstrate respect for student and colleague diversity
CLASSIFICATION: This position is classified as a full-time 195-day position and is subject to the rules, regulations, policies, and procedures of the Board of School Trustees. Pay is hourly based on the Library Assistant's schedule.

REPORTS TO: Principal

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Perform all aspects of opening the library media center at 7 a.m. and closing the library/media center at 3:30 p.m.
  • Collaborate with the School Library Director to enhance library experiences for students
  • Introduce students to library resources, including print materials, digital databases, and online tools, fostering information literacy and research competency.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to align library instruction with the curriculum and reinforce learning objectives across subject areas.
  • Create a dynamic and interactive learning environment that encourages exploration, critical thinking, and creativity.
  • Serve as a resource and mentor to students, guiding them in using library resources and promoting lifelong learning habits.
  • Manages the circulation desk.
  • Maintain the physical appearance and organization of the library.
  • Assists students and staff with Media Center services.
  • Greets, assists, and refers patrons according to their needs in person, via email and phone.
  • Monitors student behavior in the library. Supervises and trains library student assistants.
  • Tracks overdue materials and sends notices to students and/or parents. Coordinates overdues with the bookkeeper.
  • Maintain library inventory and oversee the selection process
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated under the support staff instructional aide evaluation

  • Persons performing service in this position classification will frequently exert 10 to 20 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
  • Perceiving the nature of sound, near and far visual acuity, depth perception, providing oral information, the manual dexterity to operate business-related equipment, and handling and working with various materials and objects are important aspects of this job.
