Description

Job Purpose:

The Adult Sports Attendant is responsible for preparing and maintaining sports fields/sites for adult sports leagues and programs. The attendant also enforces league/program rules and Park District rules to ensure the safety of league/program participants and spectators.

Essential Functions:

  • Prepare softball and soccer fields. Preparation includes putting out the bases or setting up the goals.
  • Prepare gyms or outdoor sites. Preparation may include setting up of nets, standards or lining of the playing surface.
  • Fill out score sheets.
  • Retrieve balls that go out of play.
  • Stock storage boxes with necessary supplies and equipment.
  • Inventory and monitor equipment and supplies; communicate any needs to league coordinator and/or Program Manager/Program Supervisor.
  • Monitor behavior of participants and spectators and enforce all league and park rules.
  • Assist league umpires and/or officials as necessary.
  • Work with school custodial staff if there are any facility needs during the program.
  • Address questions and concerns by participants.
  • Contacting and asking for assistance from supervisor when necessary.
  • Providing a good customer service for participants while maintaining a positive public image.
  • Wear official park district staff shirt.
  • Breakdown of softball/soccer fields, put bases/goals away.
  • Breakdown of gyms or outdoor sites including gathering all park district equipment and storing in its designated storage area. Also making sure gym or outdoor site is in clean, working order when leaving the facility.
  • Pick up and dispose of garbage on ball diamonds and surrounding areas.

Additional Functions:
  • Recording and tracking of any discipline issues and reporting those issues to the adult athletics supervisor.
  • Attend staff meetings and trainings as specified.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor or other Park District administrative personnel.

Knowledge, Skill and Work Experience:
Required:

  • Must be 16 years of age.
  • Experience of one to three years working in recreation setting.
  • Knowledge of softball and soccer.
  • Must have the ability to solve problems as they arise and be able to perform tasks without supervision.
  • Must be highly motivated and able to assume a positive and active role in the park, even while working under potentially stressful conditions (hot or cold weather, upset or injured participants, etc.)
  • Must have the ability to be firm with participants when necessary, enforce park district rules, and make sound decisions in order to secure the safety and well being of all park visitors, facilities, and equipment.
  • Complete required Park District trainings.
  • Certification in advances Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), First Aid and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) within 1 month of employment and keep certification current. The District provides this training.

Work Environment, Physical Demands and Considerations
  • Frequently sitting, walking, standing and typing
  • Occasionally climbing, balancing,stooping, kneeling, crawling
  • Normal office conditions for majority of work, may include occasional light and temperature variations
  • Prolonged hours seated at a desk
  • May include prolonged hours of computer use
  • May be exposed to occasional inclement weather as position may require outdoor work
  • The attendant must be able to respond to problem situations in a mature manner and within the policies and procedures of the Park District of Oak Park.
  • Ability to work independently without supervision.
  • Ability to understand and carry out verbal and/or written instructions efficiently and effectively and to read printed material.
  • Ability to operate assigned equipment.
  • Ability to effectively interact and communicate well with others.
  • Ability to interpret and explain District policies and procedures.
  • Ability to follow safety guidelines and exercise judgment in all aspects of responsibility.
  • Ability to resolve conflict safely, calmly and effectively.

External: Patrons of Park District of Oak Park; residents of Oak Park, WSSRA, Partner Organizations including governmental and non-profit groups, and the Oak Park Business Community
