Job Summary

Responsible for all repairs, alterations, and construction involving the building trades. This includes new construction, remodeling, renovation, and maintenance work required on academic buildings, auxiliary enterprises, and student housing.

Essential Job Functions / Responsibilities

  • Possesses a thorough knowledge of commercial and residential building techniques and an ample experience in hands-on construction.
  • Performs the residential and commercial interior and exterior framing, dry wall, windows, doors, flooring, roofing, siding, cabinets, laminate tops, and finish carpentry with attention to detail.
  • Possesses an ability to read work orders, blue prints, tapes, gauges, meters and other equipment.
  • Possesses and ability to perform intermediate math, communicate effectively, understand job instructions, assess and identify repairs and troubleshoot problems.
  • Work alongside other Facilities Maintenance employees to provide the campus with a streamlined and well-communicated maintenance approach.
  • Responsible to read, understand, and interpret blueprints, and make accurate field measurements.
  • Assists in the completion of campus building modifications according to drawings made by engineers and/or other applicable plans.
  • Provides support and assistance to outside contractors as requested.
  • Verifies that work is functional and in good working order before declaring it complete.
  • Possesses a working knowledge of basic cabinet construction, laminate work, milled moldings, and trim work.
  • Must possess competent problem solving skills, good mechanical aptitude, and a willingness to perform manual labor.
  • Possesses a professional knowledge on the use and safe operation of all floor mounted, stationary woodworking power tools including table saw, band saw, drill press, radial arm saw, planer, sander, etc.
  • Possesses a professional knowledge on the use and safe operation of portable hand power tools including belt sander, router, circular saw, jig saw, drill, laminate trimmer, etc.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned and specific to area of responsibility.


Full Time Staff Responsibilities
  • Support and implement the priorities and directives of the shop supervisor to the part time workers.
  • Exemplify consistent and punctual job attendance, productivity and be available (on-call) outside of regular working hours.
  • Maintain a good working knowledge of their profession.
  • Assist the shop supervisor in the training and managing of the part time student work force.
  • Perform work of a quality that meets or exceeds industry standards and building codes, within necessary deadlines and budgetary guidelines.
  • Assist the shop supervisor in the accurate documentation of employee time sheets and work order data.
  • Assist the shop supervisor in the training and instruction of all part time employees to observe safe work practices.


Skills / Requirements
  • Must be familiar with common power and hand tools used in the carpentry trade.
  • Possess a natural curiosity, great problem solving skills, good mechanical aptitude, and a willingness to get dirty.
  • Must have good communication skills and be able to relate well to people.

Qualifications / Education
  • Must have a minimum of five years of experience in commercial and residential carpentry.
  • Ability to provide proof of Work Authorization in the U.S. and proof of identity.
  • Valid driver's license and insurance may be required.
  • Successful completion of background check, MVR, and credit check may be required.


Supervision:
  • Reports to the Associate Director of Facilities Maintenance.
  • Assists in assigning, monitoring, and training personnel under the leadership of the supervisor.


Decision-Making Responsibilities
  • Limited, only in absence of supervisor and in conjunction with supervisor approval.

Physical Requirements
  • Physically able stand for long periods of time.
  • Able to bend and/or stoop.
  • Able to climb and lift up to 40 pounds to perform tasks that may be assigned in the course of operations.
  • Must be able to carry up to 40 pounds of parts and equipment.
  • Must be able to perform occasional overhead reaching, bending, stooping, twisting, and kneeling.
  • Must be able to work in crawlspaces and attics from time to time.
  • Must be able to climb ladders.
  • Must be able to withstand the heat and cold of the north Texas climate.
  • Occasionally required to stand, kneel, crouch, climb and balance, walk and use hands to finger, handle, or feel.
