Deputy Data Editor

The San Francisco Chronicle has an immediate opening for a Deputy Data Editor.

Data journalism is a key part of the Chronicle's journalism. From climate coverage to criminal justice, data analysis, charts, and data interactives are central to how we provide utility to the readers and communities we serve. As our deputy data editor, we will look to you to take our data work to the next level.

The deputy data editor will manage several data and engineering reporters on staff, and have the option to work on their own stories as well. They will work closely with the Chronicle's design team (which specializes in visual storytelling) and the Hearst Devhub (a centralized group of developers and engineers that manages a shared codebase, creates templates, and works on stories).

The deputy data editor should be an experienced journalist with strong data analysis and reporting skills. They should have an interest in managing and developing people, as well as excitement about story development and collaboration. Data visualization skills are also necessary to succeed in this position.

Above all, we are looking for someone who cares about offering readers exciting data journalism that delights and informs readers. To be successful in this role, you will need to be a self-starter who works quickly, is comfortable providing and taking feedback, is committed to inclusive journalism, and wants to own the stories that matter most.

Candidates should be willing to relocate to San Francisco to work in a hybrid workplace, where employees are expected to be in the office three days a week. The deputy data editor will report to data editor Dan Kopf.

What the Deputy Data Editor will do:

  • Work with the data editor on editing data team and other teams analysis, graphics and stories.
  • Work with the data editor to develop newsroom trainings to further data literacy across the newsroom.
  • Write code to find, analyze and visualize large datasets.
  • Report data-driven articles and develop data interactives.
  • Collaborate with newsroom reporters to produce unique, high-impact journalism.
  • Take ownership of finding new, innovative ways to visualize data and tell stories.

What it will take to be successful:
  • Experience in a modern newsroom or a related work environment.
  • Plus: Leadership experience.
  • Ability to work with multiple, large datasets, preferably using Python, R or similar coding languages.
  • Plus: Web development or data visualization experience, preferably using React, Svelte or similar component-based frameworks.
  • Plus: Mapping and GIS skills, preferably using QGIS and MapLibre.
  • Knowledge of current multimedia storytelling techniques and a desire to explore new, non-traditional story formats, specifically as it pertains to visualizing data and how systems work
  • Strong news judgment, creativity and meticulousness.
  • A dedication to organization and documentation.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at once.
  • Ability to meet deadlines on short, medium and some longer-turn projects.
  • Attention to detail in analysis and visual presentations, specifically as it pertains to current best practices.
  • A strong desire to collaborate with all newsroom teams to produce the best journalism possible.

REQUIREMENTS:
  • This position is full time.
  • Weekend, evening and holiday work may be required.

In accordance with applicable law, Hearst is required to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role if hired in California. The reasonable estimate is between $105,000 and $125,000. Please note this information is specific to those hired in San Francisco. If this role is open to candidates outside of San Francisco, the salary range would be aligned to that specific location. A final decision on the successful candidate's starting salary will be based on a number of permissible, non-discriminatory factors, including but not limited to skills and experience, training, certifications, and education.
