Trekkers Lead Counselor

The Lead Counselor for the Trekkers program must love and embrace not only the camp environment but also the camp philosophy that campers come first, we work as a team, and summer is a time to play, learn, and grow. This person is responsible for the supervision, instruction, and implementation of Trekkers programs, a summer day camp for campers entering 7th and 8th grade. Throughout the summer, the Trekkers Lead Counselor will be expected to have hands on role in mentoring staff while also developing rapport with each camper. The Trekkers Lead Counselor works with 1-2 Trekkers counselors. The Trekkers Lead Counselor must be highly skilled at staff management, conflict resolution and program logistics. The Lead Counselor must also demonstrate a high level of trustworthiness and responsibility.

Work schedule is 37.5 hours per week, M-F 8:30am - 4:00pm, from mid June - August 16, 2023. Pay range: $16.75-$18.25/hour; pay rate based on qualifications.

GENERAL SUMMARY

The Trekkers Lead Counselor is responsible for the supervision, instruction, and implementation of Trekkers programs, a summer day camp for campers entering 7th and 8th grade. The Trekkers Lead Counselor works with 1-2 Trekkers counselors, and is expected to have hands on role in mentoring staff while also developing rapport with each camper.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

* Works in collaboration with the Camp Director to prepare aspects of the Trekkers field trip schedule and leadership/teamwork curriculum prior to camp, if possible.

* Provides mentorship to all camp staff through the consistent display of a positive attitude, high energy, enthusiasm, effective problem-solving skills, and professionalism.

* Assists the Camp Director in organizing and facilitating staff training.

* Communicates effectively and frequently with the Camp Director, giving ample updates and reports on urgent camp concerns: camp behavior, safety, staff concerns, program elements etc.

* Upholds the high standard of excellence set for camp staff and practices appropriate and professional boundaries with all staff, but especially those who report directly to the Trekkers Lead Counselor.

* Implements and rigorous adheres to the Behavioral Management Plan for campers; attends parent/director meetings and carries out relevant protocols to ensure a safe camp environment for all.

* Manages the Trekker camp's field trip calendar including confirmation of trips and itinerary alongside the Assistant Director.

* Facilitates Trekker staff evaluations during weeks 4 and 5.

* Builds relationships with campers and staff to foster friendly, supportive and nurturing group dynamics.

* Maintains a practice of stewardship for recreation property including proper accounting and storage of all camp equipment.

* Enforces rules, regulations, and policies to assure safety of all children and staff.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

* Excellent communication, time management, and organizational skills.

* Desire to work with campers aged 11-14 years of age in a dynamic outdoor camp environment with multiple field trips a week.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Education and Experience

* High School Diploma (or equivalent) required. Associate's Degree (or pursuit of a degree) in the fields of Education, Recreation, Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, Physical Education, or similar fields, preferred.

* Prior experience working at a summer camp, preferred.

* Previous work with middle school or high school students, especially 7th and 8th graders.

* Experience teaching or running sports and recreation programs, preferred.

Special Requirements

* Must be 21 years of age or older.

* CPR and first aid certified (certification available during staff training).

* Must be available to work entire camp season including staff training.

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Work is performed primarily outdoors during the summer months. May be subjected to moderate variations of temperature, noise, odors, etc. Work may be performed indoors in a relatively noisy work environment, with constant interruptions. Frequently subjected to the demands of other individuals and the volume and /or rapidity with which tasks must be accomplished.

Must be able to stand and/or walk for extended periods of time. Balancing, crouching, grasping, pulling, reaching and stooping may also be required.
