Job Details

Work Schedule: 9-20 hours per week; shifts based on operational need of the organization. This position has an anticipated start date of Summer 2024, Fall 2024, or based on operational needs.

OVERVIEW

Associated Students, Inc. employs student-focused professionals with equity-mindsets. Established in 1963, ASI is a non- profit corporation guided by a student board and managed by full-time professional staff. ASI is considered a part of the Cal Poly Pomona Division of Student Affairs with a dashed reporting line to Administrative Affairs. ASI serves the entire campus population, including over 27,000 students, by providing opportunities for student engagement, student employment, and a multitude of programs and services such as recreation and wellness, student union and activities, student government, and childcare. ASI operational support areas include human resources, financial services, information technology, facilities management, and marketing. ASI is engaged in the work of being a learning organization. The Bronco Recreation and Intramural Complex (BRIC) Aquatics team plays a huge role in the operations of the BRIC Pool and lounge area. The team consists of staff who assist with the day-to-day operations by providing aquatic safety during all operating hours of the pool. Aquatics offers instructional activity programs and certification courses for students to partake. The team also focuses on creating a fun, safe, and exciting programs and special events for campus community members to enjoy. Aquatics provides an opportunity to develop strong leadership skills, professional development, work in a team environment, and be part of a great organization.

POSITION DEFINITION

Under minimal supervision from the Aquatics Manager, the Lifeguard is responsible for monitoring and ensuring the safety of participants using the aquatic facilities, as well as enforcing rules and regulations regarding pool use. The Lifeguard performs skilled tasks requiring advanced certification, specialized knowledge, prior relevant experience, and considerable independent judgment and decision-making.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Maintain constant surveillance of participants in the facility, act immediately and appropriately to secure safety of patrons in the event of an emergency
  • Enforce rules and regulations regarding pool use
  • Provide emergency care and treatment as required until the arrival of emergency medical services
  • Present professional appearance and attitude at all times, and maintain a high standard of customer service.
  • Perform basic pool and deck maintenance including but not limited to pool covers
  • Prepare and maintain appropriate activity reports
  • Perform other recreation and related duties as assigned
  • Attend all mandatory orientations and trainings

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard, First Aid for lifeguards, Emergency Oxygen, and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certifications or equivalent
    • If Lifeguard certification is through another agency than employment offer will be contingent on obtaining an American Red Cross Lifeguard certification within 30 days of hire.
  • Candidate(s) selected for the position may be required to pass fingerprint clearance through the Department of Justice and complete a Child Abuse Index Form. This qualification is only required when monitoring programs serving children under the age of 18 years of age
  • Good health and physical/mental ability to perform the job requirements.
  • Must be able to swim 300 yards continuously using both front crawl and breaststroke
  • Must be able to swim 20 yards, retrieve a 10-pound object and remove it from the pool within 1 minute, 40 seconds.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations
  • Ability to follow routine verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to effectively communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to maintain professional work conduct
  • Ability to make independent decisions and make recommendations

  • Ability to operate a computer workstation using word processing, spreadsheet and other computer applications
  • Ability to satisfactorily complete a background check (including a criminal records check)

BACKGROUND CHECK

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can begin employment with Associated Students, Inc., Cal Poly Pomona. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the application status of applicants or continued employment of current ASI employees who apply for this position.

EMPLOYMENT ELIGIBILITY

Employment with ASI is open to any Cal Poly Pomona student who is at least 16 years old and of legal status to work in the United States. In addition, the employee must be currently enrolled for at least 6.0 units (undergraduate) and 4.0 units (graduate), international student employees must be enrolled in a minimum of 12.0 units (undergraduate) and 6.0 units (graduate) at the end of the drop-add period, have a minimum 2.0 GPA (both Cal Poly Pomona and overall GPA) and be in good standing with the University. Individuals enrolled only in Extended University are not eligible for hire. Exceptions to the unit load requirement are allowed during the summer and winter semesters and for students who have applied for graduation for the current semester.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed outdoors in varying weather conditions including extreme heat. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to climb or balance and occasionally stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must occasionally sit for extended periods and regularly walk around the facility, talk and hear. The employee must frequently move 10 pounds, occasionally lift and/or move up to 45 pounds and be able to lift a person out of water. Specific vision abilities required of this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Must be able to utilize office equipment (telephone, computer, calculator, copier, and fax).

Position subject to an occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens. Annual bloodborne pathogen training is required. The initial training must be completed before the employee is assigned duties that may result in exposure to blood or bodily fluids. Hepatitis B vaccination will be offered after the training.

MANDATED REPORTING REQUIREMENT

In compliance with the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA) and the CSU Executive Order 1083, each ASI employee is designated as a mandated reporter and is required to sign an Acknowledgment of Mandated Reporter Status and Legal Duty to Report Child Abuse and Neglect.
