OVERVIEW - BGCDT and THE IMPACT CENTER:

At the Boys & Girls Clubs of Dundee Township (BGCDT), we provide a safe and fun environment for young people, with dedicated mentors and impactful programs aimed at empowering youth to succeed. Our mission is to help all kids reach their full potential as productive, caring, and responsible community members. The Impact Center is our innovative high school program, focusing on key life, academic, and employability skills. We aim to prepare youth for success post-graduation by creating awareness of local job opportunities and supporting their development in academics, job readiness, and life skills, both at the center and in the community.

JOB SUMMARY:

The BuildLab Specialist is responsible for overseeing the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of the Impact Center BuildLab Workforce Readiness Program. This includes assisting in daily activities, managing the Pre-Apprenticeship Program, and supporting the Impact Crew community workforce experience program. This role is pivotal in managing our BuildLab, a dynamic space equipped with power tools for woodworking, mechanical repairs, and creative projects. The ideal candidate will have a passion for crafting, building, and innovation, with a strong background in using tools and machinery safely and effectively.

KEY ROLES (ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES)

  • Oversee daily operations of the BuildLab, ensure a safe, productive environment for members.
  • Identify, plan, conduct and support hands-on experiences (workshops, projects, activities) in the BuildLab that encourages creativity, problem-solving, critical thinking, and the development of mechanical inclination.
  • Assist in curriculum design and implementation of engaging, age-appropriate STEM experiences focusing on woodworking, mechanical repairs, and other building skills.
  • Teach students proper and safe use of various power tools and equipment.
  • Collaborate with the Tech Lab Specialist to create interdisciplinary projects that blend technology and hands-on building.
  • Manage program evaluations and compile monthly reports that reflect activities, attendance, and participation - while ensuring accuracy in all record-keeping.
  • Work closely with all Impact Center and BGCDT staff to integrate technology into various aspects of the club's programming, and provide regular feedback to staff and volunteers.
  • Assist in developing partnerships with local organizations to support program goals and provide employment opportunities for members.
  • Ensure all building equipment and tools, including mechanical kits and work stations, are well-maintained, up-to-date, used safely, and accurately tracked on an inventory list.
  • Participate in professional development offerings to stay current with emerging trends in educational technology and tools in order to continuously improve the BuildLab's offerings.
  • Monitor, track, and evaluate student progress in building skills and adjust the curriculum as needed.
  • Foster a positive environment by creating a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere that encourages exploration, innovation, and collaboration.


Requirements

SKILLS (REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE)
  • Experience in a similar environment, such as a Boys & Girls Club or school.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and activity-building skills.
  • Strong mechanical and problem-solving skills.
  • Prior experience working with tools and equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations.
  • Ability to work independently and in dynamic environments.
  • Interest in workforce development and impacting members' post-secondary options.
  • Knowledge of youth development philosophy.
  • Proven leadership skills and the ability to manage discipline challenges.
  • Must be at least 25 years old.
  • (Highly Preferred) Degree in a STEM-related field, or educational experience in STEM subjects.

ENVIRONMENT AND WORKING CONDITIONS

Tasks are regularly performed in an office environment with occasional exposure to environmental conditions such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, and temperature and noise extremes.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Tasks that involve the ability to exert physical effort, typically involving some combination of standing for long periods of time, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of objects up to 50 pounds.
