Position Summary

This is an Advanced Practice Professional (APP) job opening APP must have 2 years CT OR experience.

Advanced Practice Professional will provide health care and specialized health services to patients and families enrolled in Cardiac Surgery. The APP will coordinate care of this patient population in collaboration with all members of the health care team. This position will be 80% inpatient and 20% outpatient.

Position will possess skills of surgical assist in the cardiac OR, vein harvesting. APP will see patients of ages 18 and older. Ideal candidates will have some experience in the OR/RNFA. Comfort level in working in SICU/CVICU, managing patients in the post-operative period, working collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team in the SICU and CVICU.

  • Independently evaluates patients in the clinic and in the hospital
  • Ordering/interpreting testing and lab results, modifying plan of care to address results
  • Provide clinical expertise and direction to support patient medication management
  • Maintain accurate documentation regarding patient status, evaluations, and treatments to physicians, streamline the patient transfer process between levels of care, including communicating specific patient needs to internal and external team members and other ambulatory care providers
  • Perform other related duties as required to assure patient safety and satisfaction
  • Participate in the development and presentation of educational experiences for patients, families, and health care professionals

Procedures surgical assist in cardiac OR

Schedule 4, 10-hour shifts, predominately inpatient with clinic rotation. Call coverage as a 1:4 ratio

Duties & Responsibilities

  • In collaboration with physician(s), APP will provide independent acute and/or routine medical care to a patients and families enrolled in Cardiac Surgery
  • Writes appropriate orders, if/when applicable
  • Practices safety, environmental, and/or infection control methods
  • Coordinates the activities of patient care and support staff within the clinic
  • Writes progress notes in EMR indicating patient status and treatment procedures performed
  • Provides health education to patients, families, and/or community health practitioners and groups
  • Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings, and workshop
  • May perform clinical research related to specific operations
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned

Working Conditions

Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 25 pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.

Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment

Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment

Will work with blood or blood-borne pathogens and will require OSHA training

As a member of the healthcare team, is responsible for providing advanced assessment, differential diagnosis, clinical decision making and initiation of treatment in collaboration with the attending Cardiac, Vascular and Thoracic surgeons. Clinical activities are authorized and performed under the supervision but not necessarily in the presence of a physician member of the medical staff. Prescriptive authority is a delegated privilege under the collaborating physician. Assists pre-, intra, and post-care of all cardiac and thoracic patients. Prepares and records patient histories, performs rounds and physical examinations, records discharge summaries, assists in all surgical procedures, performs endoscope vein and radial artery harvesting intra-operatively and formulates post-operative treatment plans for patients. Specific procedures within the specialty are individually credentialed, based on background training and experience. EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: Requires a Bachelor s Degree; completion of an AMA approved Physician Assistant or Surgeon's Assistant program; Michigan state licensure and continued certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistant (NCCPA); and current basic and advanced cardiac life support (BLS / ACLS) certification. Cardiothoracic and vascular critical care or surgical experience is preferred. Requires good verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills as well as organizational skills, familiarity with computers, and excellent analytical and decision-making skills. Ability to react to crisis situations quickly and effectively using department protocols and guidelines.

  • NP Completion of a Nurse Practitioner training program accredited by the Commission on the Collegiate of Nursing Education (CCNE) or the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC)

  • PA Completion of a Physician Assistant training program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA)

Continuing Education

  • Applicant must have sufficient education credits to maintain licensure as required by the applicable State of Michigan licensing board

Certification

  • NP Certification by a certification body recognized by the State of Michigan
  • PA Certification by National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)

Other
