A day in the life...

As a Railroad Conductor, you will coordinate activities of train crew engaged in transporting passengers or freight on a train by performing the following duties.

To be a successful Railroad Conductor, you are capable of leading train orders, timetable, schedules, and other written instructions received from Train Dispatcher and discusses contents with Locomotive Engineer and train crew. Compares watch with that of Locomotive Engineer to ensure that departure time from station or terminal is in accordance with timetable schedules. Assists passengers to board and disembark trains. Signals Locomotive Engineer to begin train run, using radiotelephone, giving hand signals, or waving lantern. Collects tickets or passes from passengers. Answers passengers' questions concerning train rules and regulations and timetable schedules. Announces names of train stations and terminals over radiotelephone. Ensures proper connections for air brake hoses and couplings, and assists with the adjustment of air-conditioning, lighting, and heating to ensure safety and comfort for passengers. Prepares reports at end of run to explain accidents, unscheduled stops, or delays.

Requirements

Qualifications include: Must be able to climb and balance well enough to climb ladder and/or cars 100% of time. Must be able to stand and walk 100% of time. Must be able to hear well enough to distinguish warning sounds or verbal instructions above loud noises 100% of time. Must be able to reach with hands and arms and/or use fingers to feel handle 100% of time. Must be able to stoop, bend, kneel, and lift at all times. Hearing Ability- To show that they can hear warning signals and communicate with other employees. Railroad Conductors must pass a Standard FRA Hearing Test. Visual Ability- Railroad Conductors must pass a Standard FRA Vision Test.

Important Qualities: Hand-eye coordination- Railroad Conductors must be able to operate various tasks while staying aware of their surroundings.

Leadership skills- Railroad Conductor directs train movement to Locomotive Engineer and must be able to direct passengers.

Mechanical skills- All rail employees work with complex machines. Most have to be able to adjust equipment when it does not work properly.

Physical strength- Railroad Conductors have to lift equipment up to 50 pounds, through rail switches, hook up air lines and electrical cables, and open, close and maneuver knuckles to hook up and disconnect railcars and locomotives.

Speaking skills- Railroad Conductors must be able to speak clearly so other railroad employees and sometimes passengers understand what they are saying.

Work Environment- While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to loud noise, moving machinery parts, outdoor weather conditions and elements, airborne particles and fumes from gas, oil, and grease.

Drug Free- Railroad Conductors must pass a Standard FRA Drug and Alcohol test and will be subject to random drug and alcohol testing.

  • Evening shift
