Description

The Lead Farmer's role is essential to the success of the farm. This individual directs and controls the growing operation to ensure optimum growth, appearance, quality, health of plants for the farm. This includes: the delivery of maximum agricultural practices and technologies that fits The Campaign Against Hunger's mission and farm beliefs; to supervise the operation of major farm projects; to train young people throughout the farm season; to be adaptable and willing to assist in other areas of the farm if needed, to prepare seasonal crop plan and crop layout.

Position Requirements

  • Nurture edible and nonedible plants in a variety of applications including: raised beds, vertical walls, spirals etc
  • Manage all irrigation and growing operation
  • Monitor water use, weed, insect and disease, sanitation and overall plant grow, health and appearance of the farm and waste
  • Ensure quality veggies are organized and ready for delivery
  • Work closely with production workers to make smooth transition of new plants or succession
  • Communicate with staff throughout the day to discuss priorities and labor management
  • Prepare to facilitate several farm workshops to youth interns, local residents, school groups etc.
  • Oversee all tasks given to youth workers
  • Supervise volunteer and corporate groups
  • Conduct field meetings with local agriculture extension workers to better the farm
  • Prepare to attend any farm related events hosted by TCAH or elsewhere
  • Plan and prepare with the Farm Manager TCAH's annual Children's Harvest Festival (Fall Event)
  • Other duties as assigned

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT- GREEN TEENS
  • Work with the Youth Empowerment dept to execute the Green Teen Program and curriculum
  • Along with farm staff, organize youth workers to prepare orders for farm stands, CSA, Food Co op, Fresh Vibes market and all other TCAH programs and partners
  • Manage green teens performance by providing training and feedback to ensure that they have the appropriate skills for assigned tasks
  • Support the Youth Workforce Manager by preparing youth workers to participate in farm related panels, forums, schools/colleges etc

ADMINISTRATIVE:
  • Work with the Youth Empowerment Assistant Manager to set up seasonal trips surrounding food awareness and food justice i.e local meetings, seminars, workshops etc
  • Record keeping- farm sales, invoices, orders, deliveries, harvests, weight and waste
  • Partake in department monthly meetings
  • Complete seasonal green teens evaluations
  • Submit a monthly report to the farm manager that includes, farm overview, inventory, sales, pounds etc.
  • Sought out new clients for sales

MANUAL LABOR
  • Produce crops of the highest quality. Hands on farming activity which includes but not limited to watering, seeding, transplanting, harvesting, trellising, pruning etc
  • Basic maintenance and repair work on machinery, fences, gates, coop etc
  • Troubleshooting or diagnosing mishaps or crop failures by implementing corrective and with safe solutions
  • Ensure farm workers tend to hens, and their daily regiment
  • Prepare natural fertilizer and pesticide to improve crop poundage and pest management
  • Sell produce and maintain financial records


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Minimum of 2 years of vegetable farming
  • Supervisory skills
  • Physically capable of indoors and outdoors tasks, which requires the ability to bend for long periods of time, and lift at least 35lbs
  • Able to commit to a flexible work schedule including weekends
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills
  • Must have reliable means of transport
  • Have the ability to think critically and give directions with a positive and constructive attitude.
  • Strong prioritization and time management skills
  • Takes initiative and is committed to improving processes
  • Effective communication skills and attention to detail and quality
  • Experience in using a variety of farm tools or willingness to learn
  • Knowledge of various aspects of vegetable farming including, field work, propagation etc.
  • Must be passionate about helping the community.
  • A collaborative team member who maintains a friendly and professional attitude
  • Someone who enjoys learning, and helping and coaching staff and co-workers
