The Ohio Department of Health Public Health Laboratory seeks a Public Health Nurse to lead work in our Newborn Screening program. Applicants must be detail-orientated to ensure appropriate follow up of at-risk infants. Preferred experience with pediatric metabolic and/or genetic disorders a plus.

What You'll Do:

* Monitors and evaluates service delivery of providers and clinics for adherence to recommendations of Newborn Screening Advisory Committee and other state and federal guidelines regarding program changes or quality assurance.

* Acts as a consultant for assigned genetic disorders in the Newborn Screening Program. Provides technical assistance, direction, and consultation for Newborn Screening Programs to local health departments (LHDs), physicians, nurses, hospitals, community clinics and the general public through coordinated site visits, printed surveys and telephone contact on planning, organizing and developing public health programs (e.g., newborn screening).

* Provides nurse consultation and technical assistance to ensure appropriate follow-up of at-risk infants in the Newborn Screening Program. Assists hospital coordinators in tracking at-risk infants to ensure prompt laboratory screening or consultation with a genetic or sickle cell center for Newborn Screening. Utilizing a personal computer (PC) with database software (e.g., Microsoft Office), assists other newborn staff in assessment, planning and evaluation of data collection through data collection tools (e.g., case demographics, clinic activities). Coordinates programmatic changes and updates for Newborn Screening Program with LHDs, hospitals and other medical providers related to at-risk infants.

* Assists Public Health Laboratory bureau chief in development of educational and promotional activities for Newborn Screening Program. Presents training sessions to medical professionals, hospitals and community clinics on topics dealing with prenatal and newborn screening. Makes presentations at local, state and federal conferences as needed. Reviews and addresses inquiries and complaints from patients, medical providers, government officials and the public.

* Maintains database for all casework related to Newborn Screening Program. Using PC, prepares required records and reports on case investigations, site visits, patient referral activities and assessment on provider adherence to program policies and procedures. Maintains detailed log of site visits and training sessions. Works with public health laboratory chief on laboratory initiatives as needed.

* Participates on advisory committees for Newborn Screening Program as needed. Attends conferences and seminars on topics related newborn screening to keep up to date on new training approaches, federal procedure changes and revised service delivery techniques. As assigned, serves as a member of a disaster recovery/business resumption team, incident response team, or similar public health response team which may include the conduct of operations on a 24/7 basis at remote locations.

Note: This position will work Monday - Friday (8:00 AM - 5:00 PM - flex) at the Reynoldsburg, Ohio laboratory location.

Training and development required to remain in the classification after employment - Biennial renewal of license to practice as registered nurse.

Unusual Working Conditions:

Vaccination for Hepatitis-B will be required upon employment.

Exposed to biofluids & tissue, sharps, caustic or toxic chemicals, &/or explosives.

Frequent exposure to periods of intense stress and extensive travel required.

Current & valid license to practice professional nursing as Registered Nurse (i.e., R.N.) in Ohio as issued by Board of Nursing pursuant to Section 4723.03 of Revised Code; 6 mos. trg. or 6 mos. exp. in nursing; must be able to provide own transportation.

* Experience gathering, analyzing, and presenting data

* Experience developing instructional/educational materials on medical topics

* Experience providing technical assistance/consultation to stakeholders

* Experience developing and presenting training/public speaking

* Experience with computer software (e.g., Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint)
