POSITION SUMMARY

Safely and effectively performs all necessary activities in and for the construction and maintenance of overhead and underground fiber optic lines.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to: Fiber Construction Crew Lead

Directs: Expected to direct and coach junior positions in same

line of work.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

Performs all types of fiber optic line construction placing, lashing, laying and installing of coax or fiber cable and appurtenant equipment, assuring same is completed in compliance with all applicable codes, regulations, and customer specifications. Works on poles, steel structures and bucket trucks, with or without supervision, in conformance with OzarksGo specifications.

Occasionally directs a fiber construction crew. Plans, lays out and explains jobs assigned and assumes responsibility for completing them in a safe, economical and efficient manner as assigned by the Outside Plant Manager or Construction Supervisor.

Prepares all reports as required in carrying out his/her duties.

Checks on consumer complaints, finds and performs maintenance on lines, including underground fiber, during outages.

Supervises adequate stocking of fiber optic material on vehicles and checking in and out material for jobs to be done. Assures that vehicles are kept clean and orderly.

Keeps supervisor advised of work progress and activities, including changes from specifications on design maps.

Is constantly alert to hazardous and unsafe conditions on the fiber optic system. Makes minor repairs, if possible, or reports them to proper individuals.

Investigates and remedies assigned service interruptions and assists in evaluating the cause of the interruption to assure safe and prompt restoration of service to members and continued service reliability.

Assists in analyzing and evaluating operation and maintenance activities relative to customer facilities and assists in investigation and resolution of service problems to assure that installations and services are made in compliance with required specifications and to maintain customer confidence and satisfaction with our fiber optic service delivery.

Locates and marks underground cable routes as requested to allow others to safely dig without service interruption or cable damage.

Makes frequent checks of tools and protective equipment and submits recommendations for replacing defective materials to assure that they are safe and operable.

Assists in the maintenance of vehicles and equipment assigned to work unit to assure that they are safe, operable and that the required documentation is completed.

Attends and participates in safety meetings to become aware of safety rules and regulations and to help assure that safe working practices are followed and a safe working environment exists for the individual, fellow employees and customers.

Maintains a current knowledge of first aid, CPR and other life saving techniques and performs these techniques as necessary to ensure that prompt attention is given to co-workers during emergencies.

Assures the maximum productive use of personnel, materials and equipment on assigned projects consistent with approved specifications and in compliance with established safe working practices and policies to assure a safe and productive work environment.

Keeps informed of and provides support for OzarksGo's goals, policies, plans and programs to assist OzarksGo in providing services which meet the expectations of our customers and to allow the OzarksGo to continue to be a positive influence within its service area.

Any and all other duties assigned necessary to fulfill the objectives of OzarksGo.

EXTERNAL CONTACTS

Consumer/Subscriber: Courteously answers member inquires, and, if unable to do so, directs them to the appropriate person.

Public Officials: Works with and assists Highway Departments, state and local; law enforcement agencies, state, county, and city when necessary. Works with city inspection personnel to enable jobs to be completed.

POSITION SPECIFICATIONS

Education, Training, and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent required. Must have successfully completed three years of experience as a lineperson. Must have thorough knowledge of fiber optic construction. Must be familiar with the considerable hazards that exist in falls, automobile traffic and falling objects and with the proper use of protective and safety equipment. Must be able to perform first aid, CPR and pole top rescue.

Equipment Operated: Must have a current Arkansas driver's license without violations that would prohibit insurability or which would adversely impact ability to perform job, and with a Class A commercial endorsement. Must be able to operate all assigned equipment including bucket, bulldozer, forklift, backhoe, trencher, directional drill, winches, drills, chainsaws and high compression tools.

Abilities and Skills: Must be able to read, interpret, and communicate documents such as safety rules, operation and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Required to write simple correspondence. Requires ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization. Must be able to apply simple mathematics and apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. Requires ability to carry out detailed written or oral instructions, and deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. Must be able to deal with a variety of people in varying situations with tact and diplomacy.

Physical Effort: Must be able to perform all activities listed in the job description with or without reasonable accommodation. This position is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and see, talk and hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Working Conditions: This position is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, high, precarious places and outside weather conditions. The position is considered a safety sensitive position; that is, there are inherent risks in performing the job and the employee holding the position will be responsible for his/her and others' safety. The position is occasionally exposed to vibration. The noise level in the work environment varies from low to loud. Hours may be irregular and include nights, weekends and holidays.
