Clinical Laboratory Scientist

The Clinical Laboratory Scientist (Molecular Technologist) is responsible for performing administrative tasks and laboratory testing as assigned by the Director, Laboratory Operations and/or Laboratory Manager. This position is intended, at a minimum, to meet the requirements of Testing Personnel for moderate to high complexity laboratories as outlined in the CLIA. Specific experience may be required based on the tasks performed to meet minimum guidelines for testing personnel assigned to perform high complexity procedures. The assigned individual will:

  • One to three years experience is required.
  • Perform day-to-day administrative functions and/or laboratory testing as required to meet the compliance, accreditation, and patient workload needs of the laboratory.
  • Follow laboratory procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting, and maintaining records of patient results.
  • Adhere to laboratory quality control (QC) policies, document all QC activities (to include daily review of records), and document all instrument/procedural calibrations and maintenance.
  • Troubleshoot test systems when performance is outside of accepted tolerance limits.
  • Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results; provide corrective actions to resolve observed problems and/or report issues to a supervisor for appropriate follow-up.
  • Produce and retain documentation as required that provide evidence of appropriate corrective actions when test systems are out of tolerance.
  • Maintain records of proficiency testing to demonstrate the involved samples were tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
  • Perform and monitor test analyses and specimen examinations to ensure acceptable levels of analytic performance are met, consistent with section standard operating procedure (SOP).
  • Perform and monitor maintenance and quality control procedures for all laboratory tests and equipment used in the laboratory.
  • Assist Laboratory Manager in ensuring appropriate staffing and sufficient supplies are available for daily operations, to include performing inventory counts and placing reagent orders as appropriate.
  • Provide pre-competency assessment training to personnel as required. Perform competency assessment for others where deemed appropriate by the Laboratory Manager.
  • Assist clinical and technical personnel in interpretation of laboratory results.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Preferred Educational Background

Qualifications include a B.A./B.S. in Biology or related field, ASCP certification in field of specialty or CA CLS Generalist license
