Summary

Under general supervision, performs routine manual labor tasks in support of the activities and operations of the Parks Department.

Essential Functions

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Uses manual equipment such as shovels, hoes, rakes and hand saws to perform general grounds maintenance including digging, raking, leveling, planting, fertilizing, spraying pesticides and pruning trees and shrubs.
  • Drives pick-up trucks, tractors and other motor vehicles with heavy equipment attached; operates professional type spray equipment, push mowers, weed-eaters, edgers, chain saws and other equipment.
  • Cleans and maintains equipment.
  • Responsible to learn and follow all safety rules, regulations and requirements.
  • May be asked to perform additional job duties that are directly, indirectly or completely unrelated to normal job functions in the course of presenting certain Town special events.
  • Performs related duties as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education, Training, and Experience Guidelines
High school diploma or GED equivalent; AND two (2) year of landscape maintenance experience; experience operating light equipment used in maintenance is required, demonstrated ability to identify various plants and weeds is required; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Ability to establish and maintain harmonious relations with fellow employees, Town officials, and outside contracts. Safe driving record. Clear criminal background check and clear pre-employment drug screen.

Knowledge of:
  • Work safety practices, policies, and procedures.
  • Materials and tools used to perform landscape maintenance.

Skill in:
  • Operating various hand and power tools in accordance with safety practices and procedures.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
  • Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
A valid Texas Driver's License is required. Minimum one year of exemplary in-house direct on the job training (in-house candidates only). Must possess one of the following certifications: Texas Certified Landscape Professional (TCLP), Texas Certified Nursery Professional (TCNP), Texas Water Smart Certification (TWSCP), Texas Department of Agriculture Non-Commercial Pesticide Applicator License (TDA).

Supplemental Information

ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS
Routine schedule is 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday. Schedule may be modified if department needs arise. May be required to work overtime if needed.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions and requires moderate physical exertion and exposure to dangerous tools and equipment and hazardous chemicals and pesticides.
