The City of Valdez Public Works Department - Streets Division - is hiring 3 summer street laborers who, under general supervision, operate equipment, maintain and repair City roads, utilities and drainage system.
Applicants must have skill in:
- The safe operation of equipment and vehicles.
- Managing multiple priorities, meeting deadlines and following work instructions.
- Proper use of PPE.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Must be 18 years of age or older.
Must have Valid AK DL, CDL preferred. Will be required to undergo driving records check.
These are temporary, non-benefited positions working 37.5 hours per week for the summer/fall season.
Positions are open until filled, review of applications begins
April 29, 2024 after which review will be continual until all positions are filled.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills and other characteristics. PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: - Repairs sidewalk, curb, gutter, pot holes and crack sealing for Valdez streets
- Assist with, repairs water, sewer and drainage systems.
- Installs, maintains and repairs traffic and pedestrian signs.
- Cuts and cleans out brush and trees along roadways and trails.
- Inspects vehicles and equipment prior to operations; cleans equipment, vehicles and work areas; reports maintenance needs and deficiencies to supervisor; assists mechanics with minor repairs.
- Complies with all safety rules and regulations.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS: Knowledge of:
- Department and City policies and procedures.
- Traffic laws, ordinances and regulations involved in heavy equipment operation.
Skill in:
- The safe operation of equipment and vehicles.
- Multiple priorities, meeting deadlines and following work instructions.
- Proper use of PPE
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed in internal and external environments with exposure to inclement weather and varying temperatures. May be exposed to hazardous chemicals, materials and airborne and blood borne pathogens, and frequent walking, bending and lifting. Employee may be called out to work off-shift in emergency situations.
