Job Details

The Splicing Technician at ASG specializes in installing, repairing, testing, and maintaining copper and or fiber optic cables to ensure the quality and timely delivery of telecommunications services to our customers. Individuals in this role are responsible for reading and interpreting schematics and diagrams to splice, terminate, and test cable. As well as maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing damaged cable and related issues in the outside plant network. Daily tasks will include but not be limited to, physical labor, hand digging trenches/holes with shovel, gathering, and storing tools, stocking trucks, maintaining equipment, operating in safe work zone.

What you'll do: (Including, but not limited to):

  • Understand and practice all safety procedures in compliance with the OSHA and ASG standards.
  • Complete with accuracy all required paperwork work and reporting in a timely manner as required by the company.
  • Prepare cable and perform both fusion and mechanical splices for aerial and underground applications; ensure proper bonding and grounding of an aerial and underground plant.
  • Ensure all splice closures and termination points are airtight and free of moisture.
  • Splice fiber optic cables including both loose tube and ribbon cables, including high count ribbon fiber of 864 count or higher, and construct proper splice cases and fiber termination panels.
  • Troubleshoot and perform maintenance to resolve signal problems.
  • Operate technical equipment, including but not limited to computer, OTDR, power meters, fusion splicing equipment, and understand the functions.
  • Lift and manipulate splice enclosures and other plant and equipment.
  • Installation and dressing of cabling.
  • Install protectors and demarcation equipment at the customer premises.
  • Install and maintain vaults, mini-vaults, and manholes; identify individual fiber cables at splice and node locations.
  • Perform manual excavations, including utility exposure, transition, and termination.
  • Read and interpret documents such as maps, staking sheets, and cable schematics, fiber count reports, and verification reports.
  • Utilize all functions of RF meters, optical meters, TDR, OTDR, volt/ohm/amp meters, and monitoring software.
  • Assist others to complete their skilled tasks more effectively.
  • Clean and prepare the construction site for work, remove debris and possible hazards Dig place pull utility products as required.


  • Locate & verify all utilities before and during construction.
  • Able and willing to use hand tools to complete tasks.
  • Perform restoration back to existing conditions, place seed and straw.
  • Identify utilities and monitor digging by dig crew to prevent utility hits.
  • Clean and maintain equipment.
  • Understand the basic scope of the project and all aspects of OSP construction.
  • Restock trucks with supplies and ensure crew have the proper tools and supplies to complete the job.
  • Performs other duties as assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the responsibilities of this job classification.


What you'll need:

Technical

  • Demonstrated experience with fiber optic cable splicing, testing and repair
  • Proficiency with tools including cable strippers, crimpers, and test equipment
  • Ability to complete testing report results timely
  • 2 years of experience in the utility construction industry
  • Ability to identify and distinguish colors of utility flags and markings on the ground


Desired Skills

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Must have good written and verbal communication skills
  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment
  • The ability to work safely, with or without supervision
  • Valid US drivers license
  • Class A CDL and DOT medical card preferred
  • General knowledge of construction practices
  • Able to work extended hours, weekends, and holidays when required
  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office suite


Job Type:

Full-Time - Hourly (Non-Exempt)

Your Working Environment:

  • Working outdoors in the element's year round


Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift, push, and pull up to 100 lbs
