GENERAL NATURE OF WORK

The purpose of this classification is to educate and provide valuable experience to students who have a passion for public service, and would like to pursue a career in local government.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Understands the overall vision and mission of the city, including the brand, service to the citizens/general public, and all other aspects of service.
  • Rotates through the assigned department and learn responsibility and provides innovative ideas to grow and improve the city.
  • Accepts designated, city-focus projects to research, propose ideas and solutions, and present final project during the internship.
  • Engages with citizens or other city employees and provides service.
  • Provide suggestions to management for improving customer service and internal processes.
  • Learns and becomes proficient on internal software systems as needed


SPECIFIC PROJECT ASSIGNMENT
Teen Summer Program, Programming, Front Desk - will have exposure to the operations of our Teen Summer Program, will learn how third party contractors work in the recreation programming environment and work at the front desk to experience the front line of our customer service and work alongside our team members. Working at the front desk at any organization is the greatest learning experience we can give the intern. They will learn how we are planning for the next season of programming while we are executing the current season.
Camp Venture, Splash Pad, Adult Basketball - will have exposure to the operations of our Camp Venture and the Splash Pad as well as what it takes to put on a sports league through adult basketball. Their involvement will be from the administration side of our camp, not working as a counselor. They will assist in the planning, budgeting and execution of various activities for the campers. The intern will be paired with one of our Splash Pad employees for customer service training as well.
Salute to America - will work the Salute to America event on July 3 and will meet with the Event Coordinators once a week leading up to the event. They will be involved with planning, budgeting, set-up, execution and post event discussions.
Administration - will shadow the Director and/or Assistant Director, meeting with them once a week. Through these meetings the intern will have exposure to the parks side of the department, budgeting, marketing and goal setting. They would also be able to provide an outside viewpoint on our operations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Currently in college either undergraduate and graduate programs
  • Passion for service in the public sector

ADA Requirements: Individuals applying for the posted position must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without a reasonable accommodation.

Physical Requirements: Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (5-10 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or work station.

Work Environment: Essential functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
