Spacecraft Mechanical Manager

Job Details

Atomos Space is developing and operating Orbital Transfer Vehicles (OTVs) to perform in-space mobility to satellites, including orbit raising, precision insertion, phasing, relocation and plane change services. We re not only striving to enable more commercial companies to operate in space dynamically and sustainably: we re realizing next-gen electric propulsion, from high power solar today, to space nuclear systems tomorrow. Atomos is funded by private investors, as well as commercial and government contracts.

As part of a passionate team, you will lead the development of flight and ground mechanical systems for Atomos future OTVs. Missions under development for these vehicles range from servicing >$500m satellites for government and commercial customers through to high dV missions beyond the moon.

This position will require developing mechanical designs from early concepts and prototypes through to fully flight-qualified structures and mechanisms. This position will report directly to the CEO and will be performed in close coordination with the Atomos Chief Engineer and Atomos vehicle subsystem teams. You will provide hands-on design, analysis, and testing for the spacecraft systems while also providing leadership and management to the rest of our mechanical engineers. This position will have several direct reports.

Responsibilities

  • Own it all: lifecycle ownership of mechanical spacecraft elements and ground systems, including primary and secondary structures, mechanisms, deployable systems, and thermal management systems. This is a functional management position, where you will lead the team while also contributing as a lead mechanical engineer on multiple programs. You will lead your team to conceptualize new designs, develop them through manufacturing, and then support the integration, test, and eventually launch of those systems. You will support and lead your staff in the analysis, investigation and resolution of routine engineering problems.
  • Program Management: in coordination with company leadership and program management, you will devise and execute a sound program plan. This will include providing estimates and bounds for dollar and schedule cost of new developments, and representing the mechanical groups needs in company-level resource allocation and assessment efforts.
  • Team leadership: provide technical and career assistance to subordinate mechanical engineers and provide necessary support for their professional growth. You will provide leadership and managerial support to team members including performance management, annual performance reviews, and salary management for staff. You will direct and participate in the planning, attraction, selection, retention and development of the required professional and technical talent for your team to meet business, financial, and performance objectives.
  • Prototype and test: find ways to create and demonstrate cutting-edge engineering designs quickly and efficiently.
  • Source hardware: select and work with hardware vendors to ensure that engineering designs can come together on time and within budget.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineer, or engineering equivalent with at least 10 years of industry experience (advanced degree a plus).
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers both in technical efforts and career-development.
  • Demonstrated experience developing space-qualified mechanical designs through to flight program.
  • Demonstrated experience working with mechanical designs during integration and environmental test programs.
  • Expertise in developing, producing, and supporting drawing packages for external manufacturing vendors.
  • Experience working with mechanisms and/or deployable structures in an aerospace environment.
  • Expert-level knowledge of engineering tools such as computer-aided-design, finite-element-analysis, and drawing tools.
  • Experience in developing resource budgets and estimating personnel, dollar, and time costs of development efforts.
  • US person*

Desired Experience

  • Demonstrated experience leading mechanical design and analysis teams for integrated spacecraft programs.
  • Experience in managing development of new hardware in a schedule-constrained environment.
  • Experience in leading spacecraft-level mechanical test campaigns for dynamics and acoustic tests.
  • Strong prototype development experience and ethos for fielding designs quickly in feasibility assessments.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing vendors and subcontractors in schedule-driven projects.
  • Experience developing mass-efficient systems for propulsive vehicle operations.
