The Recreation Therapist plans, organizes and implements therapeutic recreation groups and activities for patients with mental illness. They conduct daily interventions such as individual and group activities, crisis intervention, and behavioral programming to support patient recovery. Additionally, they collaborate with interdisciplinary treatment teams to document and achieve measurable objectives in the Recovery Plan, while also developing curriculums and resources.


  • Plans, conducts, and assesses daily recreation and recovery groups to maximize patient participation and positive outcomes.
  • Implements individualized activity plans and maintains a creative, stimulating environment for patients.
  • Conducts therapeutic activities assessments, supervises other staff, and documents services provided in accordance with professional standards and facility procedures.
  • Provides individualized care and treatment that considers the age and developmental needs of each patient.
  • Completes yearly training to maintain knowledge of care and treatment needs of patients with different ages and conditions.

Education

  • Bachelors degree required in therapeutic recreation or recreation with an option in therapeutic recreation.

Experience

  • Experience doing recreational therapy with persons diagnosed with severe and/or persistent mental illness and/or neurocognitive delays.

Licenses/Certifications

  • Certification by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation or certified as a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist by the state for Therapeutic Recreation / Activities Certification required.
