Position Summary

The Senior Grant Writer will help identify, research and submit grant proposals to institutional funding sources to support existing and planned program activities. This will include coordinating the development and submission of proposals with other Development staff, as well as writing proposals and drafting budgets. The position will also be responsible for collecting, analyzing, and reporting data on the performance of program activities that are funded by third-party public and private sources.

Responsibilities

  • Write fundraising materials, including concept notes and proposals, project budgets and financial reports, program updates and narrative reports writing in a variety of styles ranging from the highly technical submissions typical for major institutional foundations, to the more general style for smaller foundations.
  • Write in a variety of styles specific to each funder s narrative requirements, ranging from highly technical to personal submissions, using templates and forms required by the funder.
  • Assimilate information about St. John s issues and programmatic work from a variety of sources and describe our activities in clear and compelling language.
  • Support in the preparation of documents for external constituents including annual report, board report and fundraising letters.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of the interests and expectations of the organization s major institutional funders.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required

  • BA or BS degree
  • 3-5 years experience writing for a high-volume non-profit Development department
  • Strong commitment to public health for underserved communities
  • Superior writing skills and demonstrated experience developing proposals for institutional funders of varying size and giving history
  • Proficiency and affinity for the preparation of complex budgets and expenditure reports
  • Strong communications and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to make judgment calls in a variety of situations
  • Team player able to interact effectively with diverse internal and external constituencies
  • Effective in a fast-paced environment and eager to contribute to the collaborative dynamic of the department
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Able to work independently, nimbly manage multiple deadlines
  • Windows and Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Adobe Acrobat and fundraising database software proficiency (preferably DonorPerfect)
