Description

The Lighthouse of Houston for the Blind is hiring an Orientation and Mobility/Activities Daily Living Specialist (O&M/ADL) for its location in Houston, Texas. This position supports our Mission Statement of enabling and empowering people who are blind or low vision to realize their full potential.

The O&M/ADL Specialist provides direct training services and support to blind and low vision individuals to improve their living, mobility, social and recreation skills for becoming more independent in their community. The job requires providing health services to include instruction in skills including daily living skills, self-advocacy, and leisure skills as related to orientation and mobility and instruction.

The O&M/ADL Specialist must set a good example and constantly demonstrate the Light (LIGHT) Principles of Leadership, Integrity, Growth, Humility and Trust.

This is a full-time salary exempt level position and offers Health and Group Benefits options, eligibility for a great 403B Retirement and Savings Plan, Paid Holidays, Sick and Vacation Time and Other Paid Time Off.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Develops, implements and performs quality O&M assessments and training to support the mobility needs of blind and low vision individuals in maintaining their independence in their homes and community.
  • Develops goals and objectives following each evaluation to ensure that all individuals reach their highest abilities based on individual needs and desires. Collect pre/post data to measure service delivery outcomes.
  • Teaches and instructs individuals the skills needed for achievement of independent living skills.
  • Provides training for individuals in adaptive living skills such as cooking, cleaning, labeling clothes, laundry, labeling groceries, grocery shopping, medication maintenance, dealing with mail and correspondence, social media and technology.
  • Develops service and training plans for individual clients based on results of assessments, needs, and goals.
  • Assists the client with accessing and navigating through community resources and providing information and referrals.
  • Works with State agencies, school districts and blind and low vision individuals and their families.
  • Develops and maintains referral agency and client relationships.
  • Submits progress, summaries and billing reports for work performed as required.
  • Participates in staff meetings and staff training.
  • Works collaboratively with Lighthouse Team Members and others pertaining to the needs of the client.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

Education, Licensure and Experience:
  • A Bachelor's degree is preferred.
  • Orientation and Mobility Certification preferred.
  • Up to 3 years of experience working with people with disabilities.
  • Experience in activities of daily living training or equivalent experience and a strong knowledge of adaptive aids, accessibility standards and best practices.
  • Experience in planning, teaching, evaluating in a training program environment individually and in a group setting for blind and low vision individuals and evaluating needs assessments and functional levels for individual training needs.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite products. Excellent problem-solving skills with attention to detail and ability to work independently and as part of a team. Excellent organizational, communication and multi-tasking skills.
  • Ability to demonstrate the skills and competencies necessary to proficiently perform the job duties and functions, determined through ongoing skills and training, competency assessments and performance evaluations.
  • Must be flexible as working hours may vary depending on client's training needs and may include evenings and weekends.
