The Prince William-Manassas Regional Adult Detention Center (ADC) is seeking part-time Jail Officers to join our team. We welcome experienced Jail Officers who still have a passion for the profession and want to continue to make a difference in the community.

As a Jail Officer one of our essential functions is to provide a safe and secure environment for staff, the inmate population, while protecting the residents of Prince William County and the Cities of Manassas and Manassas Park.

Examples of job assignments include court escort, video arraignment, transportation, laundry, kitchen and visitation.

Schedule is negotiable but requires a minimum of 24 hours/week. Benefits include:

GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:

Performs full responsible level correctional work involving public safety and the care, safekeeping, order, and discipline of the inmate population at the Adult Detention Center. Maintenance of good relations with the staff, inmates, and the public is essential. An employee in this grade will supervise the activities of the inmates on a rotating-shift basis. Duties include the responsibility for the security, safety, control and counseling of the inmates.

Work is performed in accordance with established policy and procedures and is evaluated by the appropriate supervisor through inspections, observation, and on-the-job training.

TYPICAL TASKS:

Provides custody and control of inmates in all custody levels (may be assigned to any security post).
Performs work of a high degree of difficulty.
Ensures compliance with rules and regulations governing the conduct of the inmate population and staff.
Assumes responsibility for the security and welfare of inmates confined.
Searches inmates and their living areas, as well as other areas of the ADC and vehicles prior to transport of inmates.
Ensures all inmates observe acceptable personal hygiene.
Conducts post checks as required to include inmate counts and bed checks.
Monitors and updates post logs, writes reports and documents incidents.
Responds to emergencies and uses physical and other force as necessary to control the situation.
Inspects security devises, including bars, keys, locks, windows, doors, and other equipment and apparatus.
Immediately reports all discrepancies.
Escorts inmates as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of a correctional facility; thorough knowledge of supervision and care of inmates under Detention Center custody and the methods, techniques, and procedures; thorough knowledge of the Standard Operational Procedures of the Detention Center; ability to think and act quickly in medical, fire, and other emergency situations; ability to enforce Detention Center rules firmly and fairly; ability to detect potential behavior problems; ability to detect early symptoms of common health problems; ability to follow oral and written directions accurately; ability to maintain logs and prepare clear and concise reports; ability to recognize and respond to emergencies and to follow established procedures during emergencies; ability to conduct sanitation and safety inspections; ability to maintain order and discipline within assigned areas; ability to restrain unruly inmates; ability to maintain key control; ability to supervise trustees in accordance with assigned job tasks; ability to supervise delivery of food trays; ability to count inmates within assigned areas; ability to receive and supervise visitors; ability to receive and deliver mail to inmates; ability to qualify in the use of firearms.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to high school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED). Must complete all Criminal Justice Service Commission mandated certification and training as a Jail Officer in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must hold a current Jail Officer certification with the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS).Must possess a valid driver's license with no more than five (5) demerit points.
Must maintain a cell phone/telephone for emergency contact.
Must be a citizen of the United States.
Must demonstrate a continuing effort to apply for and successfully complete relevant academy and/or college level courses in corrections or criminal
Justice.

Work is performed in an inherently stressful environment and involves some degree or risk to personal safety.

SALARY:
Starting hourly rate $27.64 an hour.
