General Function

Employees in this position are assigned to SFPS facilities and property to provide services and repairs as assigned. Wide ranges of duties performed as described in the Essential Job Functions. Works cooperatively with other maintenance staff, principals and school/department staff, construction management staff, and district contractors to provide needed services.

Education/Training/Experience:

Minimum: High School Diploma or GED; prior manual labor experience; any combination of diversified maintenance experience and/or training in maintenance trades equaling three (3) years of experience; knowledge of standard methods, practices, tools, materials and equipment to perform the jobs; knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions for the applicable trades.

Preferred: Bilingual: English-Spanish

Knowledge/Skills and Abilities:

Ability to perform preventative maintenance according to published guidelines. Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures. Ability to use hand and power tools applicable to trade. Ability to follow routine verbal and written instructions. Ability to adapt to changing work priorities, communicate with diverse groups, meet deadlines and schedules; work as part of a team and work with frequent interruptions and meet deadlines.

Essential Job Functions

Performs all functions in accordance with established policies, procedures, safety and environmental regulations, facility and computer security policies and procedures. Functions are subject to change from time to time to meet the needs of the organization. Current essential responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  1. Performs assigned work in any of the following areas depending on experience:

  2. Assisting electricians with electrical work

  3. Assisting locksmith with doors and access control
  4. Assisting with heating, ventilation and air conditioning
  5. Carpentry
  6. Carpet and flooring repairs
  7. Concrete finishing
  8. Glazing
  9. Grounds and landscaping
  10. Masonry
  11. Metal work including sheet metal and welding
  12. Plastering
  13. Plumbing and pipefitting
  14. Roofing
  15. Preventative maintenance
  16. Other related mechanical and trades work.

Warehouse duties including, but not limited to:

  • Receives, stores, and maintains all goods delivered to the warehouse in a safe and neat manner.
  • Reports all shortages to the supervisor and his/her designee
  • Follows the guidelines of the district's hazard procedures as it regards merchandise and labels
  • Maintains control of stock to insure accuracy of physical inventory
  • Assists in physical inventories to the extent assigned by the supervisor
  • Processes all deliveries - shipping and receiving
  • Prepares shipment of returns to vendors or forwarding to district locations
  • Drives delivery vehicles as assigned by the supervisor and uses, trucks, fork-lifts and other equipment as needed.
  • Assists with snow and ice removal.
  • Assists journeyman workers as needed.
  • Provides excellent customer service.
  • Upon approval of supervisor, purchases supplies as needed to perform work. Considers the purchase of materials that provide the best value to the district.
  • Prepares job estimates and prioritizes materials, time, and labor, required to complete assignments in a safe, effective and efficient manner.
  • Receives and accurately records all work performed in the district electronic work order system.
  • Properly accounts for costs including hours worked, materials used and contracted services used to complete work orders.
  • Uses and maintains tools, equipment and vehicles assigned and assures that everything is maintained and used safely as outlined by manufacturer and or preventative maintenance procedures.
  • Performs all work using proper personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with Maintenance Safety Plan.
  • Assists Maintenance Supervisor in planning projects.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Position may be used as an apprentice for individuals wanting to gain skills for advancement.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Salary Range

$35,890 to $50,000+

Resources Used in Performing Job Include (but are not limited to):

Examples of hand and power tools include but not limited to: pipe wrenches, screw drivers, nut drivers,

ratchet and sockets, paint brushes and rollers, power drills, power saws, drain machines. District vehicle.

Computer to access email and work order system.

Physical/Cognitive Requirements:

Regularly required to stand; move throughout a room and/or facility. Communicate verbally and electronically. Use hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. Frequently required to stoop, kneel, crouch, and/or crawl. Occasionally required to sit, climb, and balance, and drive. May have occasion to perform heavy lifting up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision and the ability to adjust focus. Read instructions and operating manuals, use hands to manipulate parts and feet to control equipment and machinery pedals. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and private automobile. Some evening or weekend work for emergency calls may be required.

Environmental Conditions

Drive from site to site; both indoor and outdoor work with temperature extremes. Work on slippery or icy surfaces, in confined spaces, with sharp tools. Work may be required on active constructions sites.
