Violence Interrupter


Job Details

Status: Full Time Hourly FLSA Classification: Non-Exempt

Summary of Position: Violence Interrupter provides the day-to-day components of the proposed services, including street outreach, canvassing, mentoring, and case management, responding to critical incidents such as shootings and homicides to de-escalate tension and rumor control, conducting proactive peace building activities in the community; mediating and resolving conflicts between street groups; initiating referrals for services and supports; and building trusting relationships with critical community stakeholders.

Position is located and candidate will work in Essex County serving Newark and Irvington.

Qualifications/Requirements: High School Diploma or GED Equivalent.

  • Have lived, worked, or have significant knowledge of the targe communities and local resources and challenges.
  • Have overcome similar challenges as individuals served by the program, such as community violence, justice system involvement, poverty , and/or gang involvement.
  • Must be self-motivated, dependable, committed, and able to serve as a positive role model for individuals who may exhibit challenging behaviors.
  • Flexible schedule and commitment to doing "whatever it takes" to engaging the target population in neighborhoods with high rates of gun violence and poverty.
  • Commitment to participating in required trainings and weekly supervision.
