The Career Specialist will participate as a member of a team of educational, employment-readiness and job placement specialists to deliver its Economic Empowerment Program's career development curriculum and to facilitate placement into living wage jobs and jobs of the future. The Economic Empowerment team utilizes a trauma-informed and strengths-based lens to provide both individual and group support to clients. The Career Specialist will assist clients of the Economic Empowerment Program in their career development. The position will facilitate group workshops on career development and provide individual coaching and support. They will assess vocational needs and refer to Job Developer.

Salary: $46,000 - $50,000

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plan and facilitate trauma-informed trainings on employment readiness, skill-building with members, including resume and cover letter writing, job search and interview skills.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of strengths-based employment readiness assessments and plans with individual members based on their interests, skills and goals to support them in developing a career pathway to living wage employment.
  • Provide individual assessments to discover strengths for and barriers to employment and develop a Career/Employment Service Plan for all clients upon entry to the program.
  • Provides individual supportive trauma-informed counseling related to career and/or internship skills, general support, and employment retention.
  • Meet with clients on a regular basis to provide support to the client throughout their time in the program.
  • Conduct case conferences with team members, as needed, to further individual's progress toward employment goals.
  • Provide internal and external referrals as needed.
  • Meet weekly with Program Manager for supervision and perform other duties assigned by the Director.
  • Attend training seminars.
  • Participate in monthly staff meetings and in training seminars conducted to enhance and develop one's skills.
  • Accurately track metrics in selected data base of employers and related data and other duties as may be assigned by the Program Director. Enter data on a timely basis and assist with data for Program reports.
  • Attend coalitions, taskforces, working groups and committees focused on relevant employment issues as directed.
  • Other duties as requested based on department, program and/or organizational needs.


SPECIFICATIONS FOR EDUCATION/CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES

  • Bachelor's degree in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work or a related human services field.


REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bilingual (English/Spanish)
  • 2 years of delivering career readiness services to survivors of domestic violence.
  • 2-4 years' experience preferably in a domestic violence or other related setting with experience work with domestic violence survivors on an individual basis. 1-2 years working with survivors of domestic violence in a vocational and/or educational capacity.
  • Highly motivated, with proven capacity to work independently, take initiative, and thrive in high-paced entrepreneurial environment.
  • Commitment to the vision and mission of Urban Resource Institute.
  • Demonstrated passion and commitment to public interest and an understanding of trauma-informed services.
  • Knowledge of educational and employment barriers and resources for low-income and survivors of violence in NYC.
  • Knowledge of NYC public benefits systems.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity and experience with and/or knowledge of domestic violence within and against disenfranchised communities including individuals who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and/or HIV-affected, the elderly and individuals with mental health issues.
  • Demonstrated trauma-informed and anti-oppressive approach when working with survivors of domestic violence.
  • Experience collaborating in a multi-disciplinary, diverse team, maintaining a healthy work environment for staff that encourages professionalism, respect, equality, diversity and continuous improvement.
  • Strong writing and public speaking skills with an ability to manage and organize multiple projects in a busy, pressured working environment.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team, assess priorities, take initiative, handle multiple assignments, and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work well with people of diverse educational, cultural and professional backgrounds.
  • Must be a responsible individual with a reputable character, known to exercise sound judgment, maintain confidentiality, and cope with stress and crises in a calm manner.
  • Willingness to travel to residential and community program spaces, and community partner sites
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Docs, and Apricot.


Please note this position has a hybrid schedule of 3 days in office and 2 remote.
