Bok Tower Gardens is part of a growing movement connecting people to the natural world, to the stories we tell to understand the world and to our food systems. The Garden Educator is a position that offers critical support to connect and engage learners of all ages through quality programming that fosters appreciation, builds knowledge and cultivates a sense of wonder around food, culture and nature.

JOB SUMMARY:

Develop, plan and teach educational programs and events for all ages. Program topics may include, but are not limited to, gardening, plants, the environment, history, culture, art, multi-disciplinary collaborations and other informal learning experiences. Help care for the nature play experiences in Hammock Hollow Children's Garden as well as enforce appropriate safety regulations. Work with BTG staff, volunteers, parents and teachers. Coordinate, supervise and train volunteers. Support the Education Team in implementing school field trip experiences.

Requirements

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and implement structured and drop-in educational programs to engage visitors of all ages.
  • Ensure all programs are completed with quality.
  • Be flexible with the program schedule to meet the immediate and changing demands of visitors while adhering to the goals and flow of the program.
  • Responsible for maintenance of educational resources including opening and closing Hammock Hollow Children's Garden.
  • Ensure the maintenance of accurate program and administrative records.
  • Be a leader in communication and maintaining positive working relationships.
  • Supervise educational program volunteers.
  • Prepare for and implement school field trip experiences.
  • Observe guest behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior management techniques.
  • Handle discipline issues immediately and with genuine concern for all involved.
  • Exercise effective and personable communication with everyone at the Gardens including, but not limited to, families, volunteers, staff, and other visitors.

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in education, natural sciences, horticulture, or a related field.
  • Minimum two years of experience in teaching and leading education programs including program delivery and program management.
  • Minimum two years coordinating/supervising and motivating staff and volunteers.
  • Knowledge of principles, techniques, goals and objectives of environmental education.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Current Basic First Aid and CPR Certification.
  • Must successfully complete drug screening and background check.

  • Flexibility and ability to make learning shifts that provide a safe and effective learning environment.
  • Personal experience in gardening and a personal connection to the natural world.
  • Appreciation for artistic expression in visual art, music, architecture and the written word.
  • Self-motivated, detailed-oriented, team player.

WORKING CONDITIONS :
  • Continuous standing and moving including bending, kneeling, squatting, lifting, twisting, walking, and getting up from the ground without support.
  • Must be able to perform work outdoors in the Florida weather conditions all year-round.
