GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

This position involves responsibility for performing various activities to meet the care needs of resident in an Adult Family Home. This includes: meal preparation, cleaning, laundry duties, transportation, activities, and resident support services as well as participate in improving quality of care/services. Staff members must exhibit patience and tact in dealing with the aged, many of whom need additional assistance. The work is performed according to established procedures and performed under the direction or specification of a higher level supervisor.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Prepares specific food items following appropriate standards for food preparation, handling, and services for an Adult Family Home.
  2. Serve residents meals ensuring the temperature, portions, and timeliness of the service.
  3. Performs a variety of general cleaning duties for the entire house which includes but is not limited to: dusting, sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, cleaning windows, cleaning carpets, and laundry services.
  4. Maintain, clean, and organize all rooms and closets in the Adult Family Home.
  5. Collects and disposes of recyclables, garbage, and trash.
  6. Empties waste containers as specified.
  7. Change bed linens and make beds.
  8. Collects soiled laundry: washes, dries, folds, irons, performs minor clothing repairs and distributes laundry.
  9. Delivers mail and packages to residents.
  10. Transport residents within and outside of the facility.
  11. Assists with all resident needs for ADL's (activities of daily living).
  12. Assist with nursing related services under the direction of a physician or licensed nurse.
  13. Inform supervisor of resident needs and concerns.
  14. Responds to procedures for alarms and alerts including notifying appropriate staff.

15. Provides assistance with activities of daily living (ADL's):
  1. Dressing/undressing: ensures that clothes are clean, appropriate in season, and presentable.
  2. Bathing: provides assistance with personal hygiene (i.e. shaving, dental hygiene, nail care, hair care, etc.)
  3. Mobility: uses various devices that enable resident to ambulate independently (i.e. cane, walker, wheelchair, crutch, etc.)
  4. Dining: meal time reminders, sets up and cleans tables as needed, transports food from buffet to table, waits tables as needed, room service as needed.
  5. Toileting: assists in transfer and dressing, assists in applying incontinence devices.

16. Maintains current CPR and First Aid skills.

NON-ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Informs various staff of any upsetting event involving a resident.
  2. Attends and participates in Brethren Care Village team meets as required.
  3. Attends in-services outside of Brethren Care Village for support and needs of the residents. To maintain credit hours for the year based on Adult Family Home recommendations.


RESPONSIBILITY AND DECISION-MAKING AUTHORITY:
  1. Decision-making limited to the scope of daily operations of Bradford House.


ASSIGNMENT, REVIEW, AND APPROVAL OF WORK:
  1. Keeps Bradford House Coordinator informed of programs status/needs

routinely
  1. Receives instruction from Bradford House Coordinator.
  2. Annual performance evaluation and goal setting with Bradford House

Coordinator.

REPORT PREPARATION: 1. All changes in client conditions.
  1. All incidents or accidents.
  2. All hazardous conditions in facility, including equipment.


EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
  1. High School diploma or G.E.D.
  2. Training in geriatrics (nursing, social work, rehabilitation or therapeutic recreation) or sufficient related prior work experience is a plus.


EQUIPMENT OPERATION:
  1. Basic kitchen equipment: stove, microwave, blenders, dishwasher, breadmaker.
  2. Basic washer and dryer.
  3. Basic health monitoring equipment: weight scale, thermometer, blood pressure monitor, glucose monitor.
  4. Basic mobility equipment/aid: wheelchairs, walkers, canes, recliners, lift chairs.


SPECIFICATIONS - MENTAL/PHYSICAL:
  1. Work/task are performed primarily indoors, some outdoor activities including gardening, possible transportation, and special outdoors events.
  2. Potential exposure to blood and body fluids, with occasional exposure to hazardous materials and/or infectious diseases.
  3. Exposure to stress of working with clients and families.
  4. Exposure to clients who are confused, irrational, agitated, combative, with potential for abrupt mood swings.
  5. Lifts routinely items weighing up to 25lbs, occasionally lifts items weighing up to 50 - 75lb, including assistance with transferring residents requiring assistance.
  6. Stands and walks frequently on hard surfaces throughout the day.
  7. Bends, stoops, and twist frequently.
  8. Able to verbally communicate with clients, families, and staff.
  9. Able to visualize changes in resident mood or physical condition.
  10. Ability to think critically under pressure, react calmly during stressful or emergent situations and to assist with evacuation of clients if necessary.


RELATIONS WITH OTHERS:
  1. Communicates clearly with superiors and subordinates and maintains a cooperative spirit.


LEARNING PERIOD REQUIRED:
  1. Ninety day probationary period required.


WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Indoors, well-lighted and ventilated space. Subject to possible falls, odors and injuries from equipment and or client assistance with transfers. May be exposed to infectious waste, diseases, chemicals, and various viruses, including Hepatitis B and AIDS.

Outdoors, possible exposure to weather extremes.
